new hoops... bargain price £350 for Schnitzer hoops
Very jealous of these hoops.
Thought I'd better do some 2017 updates...
Updates seem to be a yearly thing now...
The polybushed diff seemed to not have the best effect, and whilst 30 miles from home this happened:
the diff bracket snapped leaving the diff trailing on the floor.
Tarmac and aluminium dont agree and I ended up wearing the bottom of the diff cover away
I limped to a local Homebase and got some chain and shaclkes to get me home...
I had the diff cover welded whilst ordering a new cover. This was on a six week lead time, only to be told after 5 weeks that they are not making any more..... so I was refunded!
anyway the weld is holding up strong...

That's not good. So you think that it was the Poly Bush that caused the failure? Too stiff with not enough give?
Could just be a coincidence, first time I have seen this happen but I know a good few who have fitted these bushes.

Knew of your problem just after it happened and was impressed at your dexterity then and again now after reading of this again. RAC/AA got nothing on you Pete.

How stiff is that red bush compared with a p0werflex purple? The purple is not really hard without any give like a solid rubber or hardcore racing bush (black).
On the US forums I’ve seen plenty of the boot floor being ripped or the bracket on the Car side coming of but never the actual diff casing.

I am sure the poly bush had a hand in it, It was only on for a week.
The old bush was cut out but not where the break occurred and the new bush went in easily. I think there must have been a week spot in the casing from new, and the poly bush was the straw that broke the camels back.
After all, the shock absorbing properties of the old bush are lessened with a harder bush, and that transfers more of the shock to the next weakest link.
Its the Strongflex red, which is the same hardness as Powerflex purple, both are 80shA though Strongflex are a lot less expensive.

I am wary of, and keeping a close watch now, on the diff support crossmember. Don't want this to split now the shocks are being transferred, rather than absorbed.

Well after the missus nabbed my summer wheels for her Z4, I purchased a set of 18" genuine AC Schnitzers. They needed a lot of rubbing down and preparation.
New Hankook tyres ordered and off to City Powder Coaters in Birmingham:

not perfect, but for £100 inclusive for all 4 wheels, with tyres fitted and balanced.. I'm well pleased

I also thought about the arm rest option which was rare/ discontinued and expensive
But there was always the E46 armrest......
this one cost about £15

Nice touch, I really like my armrest I got from LeatherZ, when you add the door armrest pads it makes a big difference to the comfort level. Like the remote storage too, I might pinch that idea!

So seeing as the wheels are now so 'open' I thought it was time for a brake overhaul..
Off came the rear discs.... not too bad:
but looking inside shows what a lot of people may not be aware of....
flaky rust and a dodgy handbrake..
so armed with a few quids worth.. eek!
The Mtech front brakes were upgraded to the 300mm size as on the 3 litre variant.
Refurbed callipers which are the same size, but the carriers and discs are different.
New Wezmoto braided stainless hoses, handbrake shoes springs etc. EBC blackstuff pads all round.
The callipers and carriers started out like this:
but shot blasted and painted makes a big difference:
Some Aerosol metallic electric blue (looks good on fingernails too)
Old v new:
and fitted with stickers (in homage to T_Tony)
and some wheel studs and blue nuts:

Top job mate, and don't you be blaming me for those Decals (stickers) either.
Agree regarding the inside of the rear discs, most people wouldn't have a clue. Blue fingernails ok for the weekend.
Liking the stud and nuts thing since I saw Lee fit them, maybe ......................Tony.
