I absolutely agree Duncan, if anyone up towards Lincoln would like to arrange this sort of day for these types of repairs, problem solving, I have the space and tools etc.

Well that was a fun journey this morning. Looks like one of the new replacement shock top mounts has failed. About 15 miles from home after dropping my daughter at school, and started getting a banging when the passenger rear wheel hit any imperfection in the road. Felt like the rear end was going to fall off when I hit a manhole cover... Couldn't see anything by the side of the road so limped home carefully, but noisily!

Couple of likely options to check, first being the shock top mounts (I could see the shock was still fixed at the bottom)

Lets have a quick round of "spot the difference"... No prizes... It's just for fun :p

Reason its failed is that you are missing a plate (11) and washer gasket (17) that sits between the nut and the rubber mount. The plate stops the rubber portion of the mount from being pulled through, you need to get the plates on both side ASAP.

@Brian H - don't recall seeing those when changing them over... Would they be supplied with the replacement top mounts, or I would have to reuse the existing ones?

I think they are part of the shock Gary, essentially the plates are a large cupped washer the same diameter as the metal part of the shock mount.

Pic pinched from the internet to help. Different car but you get the idea.

Edit: Are you sure they have not been mounted on the underside of the shock?

I do recall seeing them, i also remember the shocks having to come off becuase the dust covers were not put on. I bet these are somewhere under your boot carpet.

Thanks Brian :)

We had the shock mounts in and out a couple of times while working, so I probably got a bit sloppy. That'll teach me. Gonna have to try and locate a couple of replacements. :bashhead:

Stripped the boot of the car, and no sign of them! Definitely weren't left on the shocks...

Will try and contact spursfan, and see if he has some in his Aladdin's cave!

I don't think the washers come with new shocks as the ones I have done in the past both on present ///M and my previous 2.8 didn't. Could have been an expensive mistake Gary !

Totally agree Ian. If I had remember to fit the dirt covers on the shocks the first time round the mounts wouldn't have needed to come off!

Luckily I could nurse the car home safely (albeit noisily).

If all you need are the large cupped washers Gaz I might easily have some spare ones at work. If you can't get any let me know what size and hole diameter they are.

Tony.
