Rosie has what I call a sketchy recent service history. It was main dealer up to 55k, and the last three services being independent. It seems to follow the standard servicing schedule alternating Insp I and II, last one being a I.

Just booked her in for an Insp II with my trusted independent along with brake fluid, gearbox and diff oil change. In the mean time it's time to order disks/pads all round and handbrake shoes which I'll sort myself.

Update on the service carried out yesterday at Emtec in Salisbury. Grand total of £360.00.
  • Inspection II Service
  • Brake Fluid change
  • Gearbox and Differential oil change
I'd been concerned with the general quality of gear change and 'bumping' (for want of a better word) on the transmission when moving between gears. As you can see from the advisories, we may have found the causes.
  • "The prop shaft rubber coupling has split - replacement is required"
  • The differential rear mount is starting to separate, replacement is recommended"
Clarifying the differential rear mount after panicking that it's the diff hanger splitting, it's the rubber bush which sits between the mount and the hanger!

Copy of invoice for the work carried out.

Loving Rosie Gaz :)
I like the darker wheels too, they do really suit the blue. Are you keeping her pretty standard or are you going down the mod route?

Got some mechanical stuff to sort before anything else (once the water pump has been replaced).

I'm thinking there will be the odd tweak here and there at some stage. Will most likely be induction, exhaust and a remap first if I do anything.

Does a remap of the 2.2 motor yield much to write home about?

Not so much in terms of big power gains, but more to improve the general drivability of the car. Any extra horses are always welcome ;)

The induction kit and exhaust I had on my 2.0 made the engine much smoother and pull better through the rev range. The stock Z3 air box is a bit asthmatic, and the exhausts aren't exactly that free flowing either.

Looking good Gaz ;)
I hope the rubber prop shaft mount is cheaper than the M version.. Replaced it on the imola M coupe due to cracks/split. The part was £118
For a little rubber ring!

Odd little thing that it is. Never had an issue with such a thing on my E46 M3, do they even have them? And I can't imagine they exist on the e92, a rubbery donut taking 420hp... They sound like a problem waiting to happen?

Announcing Project Rosie!

That doesn't sound half as awesome of Project Panther, but there you go. Lee has bullied me in to letting him fix Rosie for me, or at least that's the story I'm going with. Definitely no tears, or grovelling involved at all - either from myself or Lee!!

Part One - Exhaust fixings.

We discovered while working on Project Panther that it's a good idea to get the exhaust bolts checked before getting the car up on the axle stands. @zedonist had already found that the bolts were badly corroded on my exhaust where the back section bolts to the first set of cats. Today I went on a tour of local exhaust centres to try and find someone willing to remove them, and replace with new fixings we could easily remove in Lee's garage.

The first exhaust centre got it up on the ramp and found the source of an annoying rattle I've had for a month or so. The exhaust hanger which is bolted to the bottom of the gearbox has split. The split is above the exhaust on the right side of the picture so I can't show you the exact fault. Hopefully a simple and cheap replacement for once.
upload_2014-11-21_17-25-49.png

Sadly they weren't keen on removing the bolts, and I had to head off to the next one. The next centre were busy, but showed some moderate interest in having a look but not today. Back in the car again, and this time I stopped at ATS in Thatcham. Again they were busy, but said if I could wait an hour they would see what they could do.

Eventually after much free coffee in the waiting room, Rosie went up on the ramp. Actually she went up a bit later because I got talking the the two fitters about their cars. One had a E36 coupe and the other and E36 vert with hard top.

When the car was finally in the air, I explained what I needed and they tried to figure out the best way of approaching it. There was nothing really to grab on due to the corrosion, so out with the gas cutter and hammer! I retreated to the waiting room while the guy battled for nearly 90 minutes to remove the four bolts. Now that seems a little excessive, but he had to be careful with what he was doing as you will see from the next picture.

Corrosion on the flange fitting has almost gone through the bolt hole. This was the worst of the four holes.

One of the "better" holes.
2014-11-21 14.33.24.jpg

He then bolted them back as best he could (didn't get chance for another picture afterwards), and then tested to make sure there were no leaks. Job done and now we should be able to remove the exhaust in Lees garage.

The manager then approached me while I was mentally working out exactly how much 1.5 hours of an ATS technician would cost me. This is what he said to me...

"Your car is sorted sir, but being honest I can't charge you for the work. We aren't allowed to do "cash jobs", and I can't process the work through our system because we don't do this kind of work. However if you are happy with what we have done, would you buy us some tea/coffee/sugar and drop them in at some stage. We have to buy our own stuff, so that would help us out."

Wow! I jumped in the car and went to the nearest supermarket and then dropped this off with them. Hopefully will keep them going for a wek or so. Cost me £22 in total for their time. How awesome is that?

Gaz now that's what you call a nice little result, well done mate!
Be interested in the project especially if you are doing the donut replacement as well as emtec at Salisbury gave me an advisory on that on my last service there in the summer and I know you guys were thinking of replacing Stacey's.

very interesting thread Gaz,oh so many parallels with mine, particularly the condition on initial purchase and the mot...,...to date only managed coolant system overhaul but gearbox/diff oil next on hit list to do,oil arrived earlier today, followed by renovation of assorted bushes and preventative under body corrosion treatment next year when funds permit
great to see hear progress your making and shall be following your progress

Just as an aside for people, BHP is a gradual rising figure linked to engine speed rpm, and the car will only see the full bhp figure at the top end of the rpm range (usually just before) and only for short periods, some cars and drivers will never use the full bhp range on their cars and most of us will only ever use the upper end of the second third of the power band, you certainly will never use the full power in top gear either unless on a race track, and then only depending on the length of straights allowing you reach full power. Torque however is a different animal and it is this that causes the damage, especially if it is produced by the engine in a flat line in a very small power band.

I wring out that V8 on a regular basis, but here we go:

"And I can't imagine they exist on the e92, a rubbery donut taking 295ft/lb at peak torque output... They sound like a problem waiting to happen?"

:p

Part 2 - Wobbly back end? To sub frame bush, or not to sub frame bush. That is the question!

Tonight was meant to be an investigation of what needed to be looked at on Rosie. What happened after three hours of effort in the garage turned out to be a little more involved than I had assumed...

Having finished up this evening I have this list of issues to get sorted...
  • Guibo bush - Lee already has one spare, so that's sorted
  • Handbrake cables (both knackered)
  • Fuel line corrosion (looks to have taken a knock at some stage)
  • Rear shock absorbers need replacing.
  • Rear ARB's need replacing
  • Rear drop links need replacing
  • Exhaust bracket from gearbox has snapped
  • Rear beam bushes need replacing
  • Diff bush needs replacing
First things first, lets get her wheels off and up on axle stands.

Bit of weight removal. Looking at the rust, it wouldn't be much use in an emergency anyway

You can see where the wheel carrier cradle is bolted on at the back in the red circle.

I think i set a new record last night, Never planned to go that far but we dropped the axle in under 3 hours.

It must of been my beautiful assistant =))

In the mean time we'll get the axle up on the bench and commence cleaning/new bushes
