Artic Silver 2.8 - OEM+ long term project

Thanks Tony, this is massively reverible too, just pop an OEM relay back in :D

considering buying a few old relays and modding them for peeps.

I've mountains of relays if you're interested, great write up by the way, always nice when people take the time to share advice with others. Well done

Another few jobs done on th Z this weekend including the zero tango milestone!

first though, bought a tri-colour stitched wheel off this very forum for great price and fitted it with my exisiting airbag.

really simple process.

Need to disable the alrm first using this keyhole on top of the siren

DSC_1796.jpg

disconnect battery (10mm socket)

remove lower steering cowl (one philips screw and some clips)

unscrew airbag from behind steering wheel ( 2 x t30 torx)

pop airbag off and disconnect two wires (horn and airbag)

unbolt 16mm center bolt, force needed!

disconnect wires from under the cowl (2 connectors on my single phase bag)

yank wheel off

reverse the whole process.

whilst the wheel was off i used the sapce to replace some blown dash bulbs

sucker needed to pull binnacle out.

BMW handily make note of which bulb goes where! much better

Next was to finally rid the Z of amber.

the process is really simple, 4 x 8mm screws to each light, easily accessed with an extension.

4 connectors and then they pop out.

i removed the airbox and washer bottle to give myself more room (again really simple to remove)

also drilled some holes in my airbix for more noise, no icnrease at idle but a much much better noise at WOT.

Headlights back in and finished.

the noise is pretty good, not noticeable when pootling but comes alive at WOT, also, barely visible so retains stock looking bay

Quick tea break mod (i work from home)

crappy old bonnet badge

new (non-genuine) badge, not perfect fit so will be buying a genuine one later in the year, but this was £7 so 'you pays your money'

Looking very nice Tim and like the sucker for binnacle, TOP TIP. Great photo's too thank you.

Tony.

Looking good

a de-tango really does look better imo

Another quickie.

Carried on updating the lighting. The headlights i bought from @sirius-c came with some uprated bulbs and made the old side markers look really orange.

so whipped out the old halogen 501s and bunged in some Xenon White LEDs

i think they are a touch tooooooo bright ... but they look good. might play around with some slightly warmer colour temp LEDs

Decided that the side markers were too bright so swapped them with my number plater 501s. its really handy that the sidelights, side repeaters and numberplate all share the same bulb type!

here are the differences

Standard bulb / 'White' LED / 'Xenon' LED

Airbag light was on after swapping the steering wheel as i accidently unclipped the wiring with the key in the ignition. so bought one of these from ebay for £12

10 seconds and the airbag light was off! great little tool

Small update this week (MOT next week eeeek)

Hated (HATED) the horrible dealer numberplates that came with the car, the front plate was cracked and the back one was straight out of the 90's.

Ordered some pressed metal plates off eBay on Friday night and they were here monday morning!

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/251663535494?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT

decided to remove the numberplate plinth whilst i was there, grim!

Cars look so much better without front plates

DSC_1893.jpg

bent the front numberplate slightly over my knee and then stuck it to the car, added some tape to hold the shape for a couple of days.
