I just read on an Orlando news page that VW have admitted trying to cheat the emissions rules in the USA and will pay $4.3B.

Tony.
And that's for just one lie. Trumps bill is going to be enormous. But then, he can't tell the difference between the truth and anything else.

It would seem Fiat/Chrysler are up next if what I've just read is true.

Where did you read it please? I'm surprised that Mercedes haven't been mentioned because the Vito has been untestable for years. They don't rev above 2,200 when stationary same as the VW's etc.

Was on BBC 10 o'clock news last night. Now, how likely is it that any Fiat sourced ECUs find their way into Chryslers?

Didn't realise these cars wouldn't rev above 2.2k revs. Actually a reasonable limit to prevent clutch burn-out and stop people using necessary revs, but not why its there I suspect. I presume you have to put an advisory in in the same way that I frequently get because of under engine trays preventing inspection.

You can only Rev a car/vehicle as fast as it will allow you to Ian. If you cannot produce a result through the emissions tester we have some forms the RMI advised us to fill out and keep in the paper copies of results for the required 3 months.
I discovered one day as I allowed the car to roll accross the yard at work with a small amount of steering lock on that when I pressed the accelerator it would Rev freely to the red line !! Therefore the ABS sensors know the wheels are turning and the steering angle sensor knows the wheels aren't in the straight ahead position, ie that the car is not likely to be in a "test" situation.

I thought that was only when they are cold Tony, I'm sure my Vito will rev fully when warm! Hmmm....going to have to test this (not now though)

All I can comment on Brian is every one I've tried to smoke test has been run till the oil temp. was at 80 deg. as per requirement.

Tony.

Edit. There's not much more frustrating either than having wasted 10 minutes or so on a frosty day when all you're testing are diesels for it not to Rev high enough to produce a reading on the machine.:(

if anyone has been cheated then it is the government (ultimately taxpayer) Taxation rates have been set based on emissions, and VW / Audi/Skoda etc owners have been paying too little tax for the poison their cars have been kicking out, so those owners have got away with paying less, so how they can now say they have been ripped off is beyond me.
A lot probably chose these cars as company vehicles based on a tax incentive basis, they have been running round in better performing vehicles than a real emission reduction would have been able to produce, and paying less tax for it.
Now if they had been told 'ok your real emissions take you up a couple of tax bands and you now owe us ££££'s' then that is a reason to feel aggrieved.
I am surprised the government is not after the lost revenue and making the owners pay extra.

I have been on the sharp end of a proper emissions reduction, where Fiat reduced the emissions by software so much that our (then new) Fiat 500 had difficulty pulling off and going up hills. That was a software modification in place all the time, not just for a test.
After Watchdog got involved Fiat recalled them, They re-flashed (remapped) the software and it was a different car afterwards.
Maybe that is what will happen to the VW's when they go for the modification, and they get down graded to perform to the tax rates they have been aligned with.
Now that would be reason for compensation.
