If I remember correctly Sean, HR in the reg means it comes from Swindon. And most likely therefore from Dick Lovett. For a real showroom look you can get a pair of plates made up with the supplying dealer's graphics. We did it for my brother's car that came from there.

£45 with postage. Expensive for number plates. But you are paying for someone's time also to design and match the graphics.

The number plates were decent quality (drill from the back). But I didn't think much of his engine bay labels - too fuzzy. No reason not to buy from BMW for those.

Hi Sean. As a fellow owner of a pre-facelift 2.8 in need of similar work this is one progress thread I’ll be following with interest. Your progress photos are really good.
Made me smile when you said “I had a spare hour” then went on to list a shedload of work. - It would take me an hour just to jack it up and take the wheels off, lol

Once you know these cars they are so easy to pull apart with the right tools, its just them shitty little 8mm head screws that do my head in, you even have to grind an 8mm socket lip flat so it will grab the 2mm thick head

It looks good for it's age mate. Agree on the socket, had to do that before for the belly pans on Vauxhalls.

What size wrench are you using? I've never found a naughty one yet with a 1/4" set.

The head is very narrow and yes rust is the main issue, it takes very little to stop you getting a socket to fit
 
the bolts holding the headlight in are the same and the heads rusted up on my 2.8 the most awkward one... got them out eventually and cleaned them up and re-used them for the more accessible ones.. i should have put new in maybe i will one day...

as above though grind a 8mm socket so its nice and flat and has the meat to grab the hex of the bolt if that makes sense.. I keep one now with my bahco tool kit an old 8mm and its proved useful loads of times...
 
You tend to find that cheaper sockets have a larger chamfer on the inner face which, in the case of these very thin hex heads, loses much of the potential grip.
