Places like this still exist which is good to know, not that I really wanted to have to use them so soon. Alternator down! #MINIAdventure

Nice to see places like that still around. Hopefully you won’t need a HPFP anytime soon but worth keeping a rainy day fund Gaz.
I bought mine from Neobrothers prices are up on there website at the moment must be low stock but if your ever the need avoid the Chinese refurbished from eBay as nothing but bad reviews on some of the mini forums. I experiencing intermittent solenoid problems on my oil pump another thing to buy but still great fun when they are sorted :coolsteer)

There used to be half a dozen of such places in Gainsborough but I don’t know of one now, and only 1 left in Lincoln when i packed it in. Cheap crap straight off the shelf knocked all that in the head.

Hoping that doesn't make my MINI bingo card! It had a Bosch one fitted so getting that refurbed rather than fitting the incorrect one I got from GSF is probably going to be better long term. Still love the car despite it needing work!

Much the same down here in South Wales Starter and Alternator refurbisers are now few and far between. I am lucky to have one not that far away who rebuilt my 2.5 Alternator when that failed. Had issues with another supplier from Birmingham who supplied two rebuilt alternators both fitted but set codes for a fault as they both had a charging control error. Original unit was rebuilt and an oem diode pack fitted by my local man, Slapped that in and works perfectly.

Looks brand new. Genuine Bosch regulator fitted, new brushes and bearing. Was in very bad condition and arcing. £135+vat is a bargain. £100 cheaper than the equivalent WAI from GSF and half the price of a Starline from Euro's.

That's better voltage!

The absence of the yellow warning triangle on the dash means no fault codes, confirmed with a code reader.

100% fully functional fleet again!

This is becoming a progress thread on it's own now! Mainly enjoying trouble free motoring but always improvements to be made...

First off, silicone hoses...

This has worked off about 4 times now, it's the cold air feed to the turbo, and this silicon pipe is a common change on the N14 engines. However because the inlet is smooth the silicone doesn't have anything to bite in to and works it's way off.

So, I've cleaned it all up and tried to rough the surface up on both the inlet and the inside of the silicone pipe - then double clamped it... You can see where the clamping force is mushrooming the end of the pipe already. Will see how it goes, but if anyone has any suggestions for this kind of situation let me know.

Also, because the old number plates are crap, splitting and look awful...

We hit up our tame number plate maker - Taylor Made Decals - for a set of fresh (road legal) 3D gel plates (complete with legally required markings requiring the V5 and photo ID before he makes them).

Hot damn so much better!

.....and then from the rocky horror show handbook of previous owners..... The previous plates were fitted with self tapping screws through the metal of the tailgate. Was trying to pick the other sticky pads off and my finger hit metal swarf. Don't think the other hole was OEM either, so it looks like a firing range target behind the plate....

You could try thoroughly cleaning the alloy and inside the pipe, then applying a single lap of double sided adhesive carpet tape to the alloy before sliding the silicone pipe onto the housing. Then fitting the hose clip.

This is really cool, it's a 3D printed mount for the ODB gauge display. Screws directly in to the back of the rev counter pod using the existing holes.

Engine bay temperature prep for track mainly but also as I’m about to get an induction kit. This little fella generates a lot of heat and has a basic metal heat shield covering it. The engine bay temps can get high enough to melt the rocker cover,

IMG_0408.jpeg

This is a Forge Motorsport turbo blanket which aims to absorb some of the heat and and not radiate it like the tin cover does. There’s no performance gain, it’s purely functional. Does it work? No idea, however if you were stupid enough to touch the old metal cover then you’d lose the skin on your hands - I never tried it’s blindingly obvious. if your stupid enough the touch the blanket it’s still bloody hot but no skin damage - and that was after a 20 mile drive (don’t touch things like this, I’m an idiot that does things so you don’t have to!).

Ha,ha. I bet you touch "wet paint" signs too. I had a Metro Turbo many years ago and it had a similar type of heat sink cover.

Wouldn’t be a daily if it didn’t go on track, so off to Brands she went! She actually made it this time!

IMG_0435.jpeg

So how is it on track? It needs money thrown at it to make it handle, it’s crying out for coilovers (probably stiffer roll bars as week) despite it having factory sport suspension. It leans into corners which unsettles the car but the LSD helps it grip and pulls the car through mostly a little sideways.

So all good then apart from that? Nope, looks to have a leaking rocker cover gasket and the clutch gave up on what would have been the 3rd from last lap of the session. Managed to coast in neutral around the last corner and carried enough momentum to make it to the garage. Bit of swearing and inability to get any gears, and Luke saves the day by messing with the clutch pedal and we were able to get home. The clutch release is making awful noises so that’s now a priority - may as well go for a lightened flywheel while we are in there 👀.

So the plan is to throw money at it. It has the makings of a fun track/daily and I’m not bored of it yet.
