I too do not like French cars. That said my other half does and I've let my guard down a little.

I had her 08 Citroen C2 1.4d VTR off her 12 months ago ready for when my daughter passes her test. It's done 105k miles and is a little cracker. Certainly the best looking and gutsiest car you can get at the very lowest end of insurance for an 18 yr old (£1000...).

My other half now has a Peugeot 2008 and I have to say it's a nice car.

This is choking me to admit however. As I really don't like French cars normally.

What's the budget?
As cheap as possible really, got a couple I'm vaguely interested at for around 2.5k. Would prefer to keep below that if possible... There are loads on eBay and Autotrader, so I'm kind of spoilt for choice. Just wanted to make sure the Polo generally isn't a money pit...

If I were looking Gaz I'd go for a 1.9 TDI Golf, better built and comfier drive than a Polo

At the price you may find 'boring' versions i.e. The Jetta/Bora variant or even Skoda superb size in better spec and with good service history.
Don't know if estate versions are cheaper?
The Skoda VRS Fabia is nice looking version of the polo but probably had a premium due to the cult following?
Don't forget the Seat versions - Toledos are jettas and usually good value too.

We had a Bora that we bought from work with only 44K it was a very good car. My mate has a Skoda's Fabia 1.4 d. He's very happy with that too.

Despite having had several 405s including a fabulous 3.0V6 I decided never to entertain ever having anything Peugeot related after they closed down in Coventry. Had a massive impact on the local economy. Gail also had a Renault Scenic - was a great family workhorse and a Citroen that was good until it spontaneously rearranged all its engine components.
Only German and JLR from now on. Oh and a Ford Ka for the nipper ;)

I'd think twice about driving something as small as a Polo long distance on the A34 every day though. Can be a scary road.

but you don't mind your kid driving a Ka?

Polo's are tough as nails: 2002-2009 got 4 star NCAP and after that 5 star. (better than equivalent z4)

Not happy about it tbh but he's only doing 5 miles per day all on local 30mph roads. As soon as he's got his spurs and the insurance becomes a little more reasonable we'll change it. He will be off to uni in a few months so won't need a car to much for a year or two hopefully.

Introducing the new daily shed! :D 2003 VW Polo 1.4TDI Sport

Went for a speculative nosey over this beastly thing this morning expecting it to be a literal shed. It was at a dealer 1 mile from my house for £1000, the only reason I can see it being that cheap is it's 163k on the clock.

Got there and it was -3 so a great test of its cold start! Turned over immediately, no hesitation and sat idling perfectly. Put my code reader on it, no stored codes. Waited for it to defrost while nosing over it and then off for a quick test drive. Absolutley spot on to drive, clutch & gearbox silky smooth. Held above motorway speeds with ease, nice and smooth.

There are a couple of issues with it but nothing major. The rear windscreen wiper doesn't work, so eBay should be able to source me a cheap replacement.

Comes with a fresh MOT and £50 off the screen price.

I'll sort some more pics in a bit, just had to sort the tax disc online and now need to sort a residents parking permit.
