I should have put judder at low revs not gears. I understand they won’t touch the pump if they think the engines gone, no point. I’d happily sign for the work to say I have no comeback if the engine failed after the water pump is done, that’s the chance I take. They did say it would be cheaper if cash was paid, no VAT involved which I wouldn’t want to do for such a big job. Surely that’s only protecting them.

Haha, let's hope there are no HMRC inspectors on here.

I guess they'd be protecting them selves if you paid cash, they could just say they've never seen you before.

A judder at low revs.

Maybe not related directly to the engine it's self

Could be numerous things, coil pack? Plugs? Fuel problem? engine mounting? even gearbox?

Cash in hand means no comeback and no integrity. Leaking pump should be OK if topped up if the leak is not too bad. Take it elsewhere

Sorry. Let’s hope their is. We all get nailed to pay ours under paye. Why should they consider it an option

Yes, I should have said "they'd better hope there's no HMRC inspectors on here"

They have done an engine change before on her mums partners old Saab and he knows them quite well so apparently they are genuine. Why I can't remember I think it was to do with a turbo and even then they suggested a engine replacement but I think not long after he sold the car. He is probably trying to do us a favour as they know it will be expensive and trying to save money, something I still don't trust. It's not like throwing a hundred quid at it.

That's why I don't think it needs a replacement engine, she told them the wrong info by saying its noisy and not saying it judders. Before I got chance to speak to them to tell them exactly what was wrong they had made up their mind. I could be wrong but everything points to a coil pack or similar. It started juddering end of last year, I changed the spark plugs and it drove like a dream for several months and then came back. If you drive steady it is fine, put your foot down it judders up until it picks up a bit of speed. I could be completely wrong and it does need a new engine but it's going to be expensive if its not necessary, will wait to see how much they quote.

where is it?
Shrewsbury. Will see how much they want and get a price to fix the leak.

they may refuse just to fix the leak.

I wonder if I took mine there because "the fan is noisy" they would say it needs a new engine... sounds like a common recommendation.

Anyway, It will be noisy if the water pump is knackered..

sounds like just because they saw a woman come in with it... kerrching.

This garage sounds like a right dodgy outfit. Speak to some other local garages and see if one can recover it and provide a second opinion.

It does seem like the garage is giving themselves the easy solution. But if it's the timing chain/tensioners, water pump and you have an oil leak, then they may just be giving an economical solution. I currently have an r56 Cooper S which decided to throw it's chain after a week.

Take a video of it running and post it up (but if it sounds like a tractor/diesel, then it's probably beyond economical repair). If I were in your shoes, I would cut my losses and just sell for spares. Sometimes it's better to just take the hit. Alternatively, fix the pump and trade it in.
