few friends have had it done with varying results. One chap had it done at 10am one morning and was down the pub having a pint by 8pm, other guy was wearing sunglasses for 2 weeks because the light hurt his eyes. All have said they have no regrets and have near perfect vision again so i'd think it was worth doing.

Yeah I've been warned as I need the lasek procedure doing the recovery time is 3-5 days and people can get quite a bit of pain and I've got to wear sunglasses for about 2 weeks! Will keep you posted but not allowed to use computers or watch tv for a while!

I'm an optometrist and see the ones that are not satisfactory or worse, the odd disaster.

Oh yes - I can have it done for free -- but I'm not.

My only advice is choose the surgeon carefully and dont be mislead on price. You get what you pay for.

You've scared me now phil :( I've booked in with a surgeon who has done a lot of procedures (19 000ish) and was quite confident to get good results reading reviews people have left about him. I'm sick to death of wearing glasses and contacts.

What do you mean the odd disaster?

I have a friend (well a colleague) who had this done a couple of weeks ago. They have not had any problems at all and just have to keep using drops for a while. They do not seem to have any problems with viewing pc's or tv's infact the only problem they have had is that she is missing her glasses!
It seems to be a pretty common procedure these days but there is always a risk with anything I suppose.
I am sure you will be fine, best wishes :-bd

Cheers I've spoken to a couple of people who've had it done and they say it's amazing! I just wanna be able to wake up in the morning and be able to see without thumbling around for glasses or contacts! Oh well will keep you posted on how it goes.

Laser eye surgery should be treated as cosmetic surgery. You are taking a 100% healthy organ and subjecting it to a surgical procedure.
It it ends up anything less than 100% healthy afterwards then it has been compromised.
It is also depends on what you consider to be a success.

Case I saw on Tuesday this week.
45 yr old female , very short sighted then , lasered 8 yrs ago. Having problems now at both distance and reading after being happy with the procedure.
One eye has regressed ie is short sighted again. This eye can see close up though. The other eye is still good for distance but is struggling to read. The age problem.
So the solution to relieve the symptoms of headache, eyestrain and visual discomfort - varifocals for more or less constant wear.

Was she happy - well yes. In her words - I've had 8 years worth glasses free time.
Make up your own mind carefully.

Ok phil thanks for the advice I know it's a very individual procedure and outcomes differ. Also I understand your eyesight can regress. Will find out for sure tomorrow. Thanks Daz

This is what he means
I had laser surgery approx 10 years ago
i was very short sighted, initially they said they could not do it.
Then he said he could do slight laser enabling me to have glasse with thinner lenses " not bottle".

Thats when the trouble started, he carried out lasek treatment and tried to do a total correction,
i was unaware of this at the time, i had trouble getting home that day, fortunately my wife was with me and we struggled home via the tube in the rush hour.
You could say I had a over burn, like leaving an iron on a sheet the heat continues,

I went from -11 to +5 an optometrist would understand this, my brain and senses could not cope with this.
I could not drive for approx year in the dark, they said after a while it would settle.
Well after 10 years and hundred of visits to the clinic, several more laser ops, wavefront, lasek and t cut surgery. i ended up with Cornea transplant privately, due to the amount of scar tissue,

In the last year, I have had to have a macular op, then the retina split, creating a need for a catarach op,

While i was visiting the people who did the laser i was often refered to as the worst of the worst, and often had the clinic to my self as not to put off potential new clients.

Surgery has come on leaps and bounds in last few years,

Hindsight 8-|

Footnote
Can i see now
One eye i get by, the bad eye no vision very blurred.

Been told this week i might need more surgery

Yep Boysie thats pretty bad but not the worst I've heard about.
A guy was 'over lasered' penetrating the cornea, eventually. Received a six figure sum as compensation as his eye was enucliated (removed).

Hi Phil

So many people have told me it better to lose an eye
than have partial vision, as it interferes with the good eye

Sounds terrible until you experience partial vision

True Ray.
Think about it this way - you have 2 eyes and combined you can only see half of the test chart in the opticians. Result - not legal for driving a car etc.

Second person is blind in one eye but has perfect vision in the other. Result - perfectly legal to drive a car. Only issue is no stereopsis. Dont go and buy a 3D tv etc..

Hi Phil

Fortunately i am legal to drive a car, or cars in my case
But recently I had my HGV class 1 taken away
Which did upset me somewhat
Losing something you have passed is sad :(

Having the problems over the years with my vision
has affected my life in such a big way
People shouldnt take there sight for granted

Look after it
