I'm 43 mate, too old, and I don't have the time or money to re-train. Hey ho, lorry driving for me then! :arghh:
Well then mate, you'll just have to put up with some learning in the Z Shed come next year. It'll be fun.:D:D:D

Sorry for the late entry here , still having nightmares about this alarm business , but I am convinced I was just unlucky to blow my alarm module, yes I still have a spare guaranteed working "brick" style fob. Also don't forget that the ignition keys are "chipped" so the car can't be started without one so for me the only thing I miss is the central locking function on the alarm (drove mine around for 2 days with the flashers going off no one bothered)so now i'm just careful where I leave it

A brick style fob is on its way to me purchased from Ebay, if we can get it all working another fob would be useful to add to my spare key set. I have central locking feature sometimes for drivers door & boot since I got the car in August passenger door works independently and depending on the order that boot and drivers door is locked/unlocked some times they work together and some times not.
Should we get it all working would you part with the one that you got from hard top not in use ?
Never having see one of these fobs are they just fobs are do they have a key as well

Geoff don't confuse the 2,the fob is just for the alarm system,as stated most were fitted aftermarket by the dealers , cars were just supplied with ignition keys

That is what I thought but when a key was mentioned I was not sure.
The locking set up on mine is rather strange something some where has been disconnected as we tried to get the siren under the bonnet working with the little key but no luck but not sure why people disconnect them, may be to sensitive and they go off all the time ?

@Geoff Crispin - you appear to have a few things going on if I read your account correctly - if I've read it wrong - apologies.
Intermittent lock performance is usually associated with a breakdown of some of the cables where the wiring loom in the boot leaves the car body and enters the boot lid - it is commonly referred to as the `loom of doom'. It can cause all sorts of strange events. There are a few photos on the forum but I can't find them at the present. It can also be a faulty door solenoid but I would start with boot wiring check.
The siren is part of the remote locking system. It will not sound from the key operated central locking.
The siren has an internal back-up battery - so if you disconnect main battery you should hear it sound as it runs down. If you decide to check siren this way then before you disconnect make sure you have your radio security code - you will need this to reset radio on reconnection. HTH

Edit - photo of typical loom damage added. This is from an article on zroadster.net (author may be on here)

Jonco, reading what you have said again about the radio, no code came with my car, when I asked about one the dealer said that as the radio was a newish all dancing replacement with a detachable front it does not have one but I don't know if this is right.
We turned the siren on with the small key but not working, if it has an internal battery could that be faulty ? or not working as we have no active fob ?
There could also be another problem as not using it for a few weeks and just unlocking and locking the doors leaving the radio to work on & off with ignition key doing/looking at things, my son was over and was showing him the car he started it up and it was not to instant, he gave it a few revs and left it ticking over and then turned it off, when I went to it again a few days later it would not start /turn over, so recharged the battery. Have used the car a few times and no problems, but talking to two chaps that have got Z3 locally they have the same thing with the battery going flat and my battery was replaced by the dealer before I bought it or that is what he said. Is this and on going problem with Z3s. Both chaps have had motor trade electricians look at their cars to sort it, which they had to pay for but they still have the problem.

Mine sometimes sits week in and week out and its always alive at the flick of a key but as the weather gets cooler it may be that the battery is showing a problem i have nine in a garage and leave it unlocked so the alarm etc is not presenting a drain.

Antm had not thought of that may be I should keep it un locked, but I have my Tr4 in the garage also which I keep locked just encase but I don't think that the 4 would be very difficult to get into and going. After Christmas I will try it unlocked as we have a car parked in front of garage but we are in London for Christmas so wont take a chance.
I will report back in due course.

Sorry from your car year I presumed you had BMW Business Radio - if you post a pic of your radio somebody else will no doubt be able to confirm.
The siren will not sound unless the system is armed - that is why I suggested battery disconnection as a means of checking it.
As others have said there is a natural battery drain and leaving the alarm system off should reduce this significantly.
However, if you have a wiring loom fault this could drain battery as well. I suffered with erratic flat battery and door locking until I found and fixed boot loom failure - once done no further problems with either. Sometimes fault will blow fuse but in my case it didn't. You should check your alarm system fuses once you have your fob.
What puzzles me is you original comment about red light flash and beeps when removing ignition key - are the beeps from the radio?

Hi Jonco it makes the same sounds when radio is switched off.
Sorry Geoff - I didn't phrase question clearly - was trying to establish whether beeps were from inside cabin or from under bonnet i.e siren.

It sounds to me like it is the radio remove the face of it before turning off the ignition then turn it off the beeps are probably the radio reminding you to remove the face so its not nicked ?

My 97 1.9 also beeps three times when the car is shut down and the key removed. It is definitely coming from under the dash not the engine compartment. @littlefeller is the fob you have the brick style? If so I need one if you'll ship to Canada. PM me please. JIM

If it's an after market Sony head unit they beep after turning off.
