On my Sept. 98 1.9 the little red light by heated seats switches flashes once when ignition is switched on/off but light does not flash on/off all the time when car is locked, and hazard lights do not flash When ignition key is taken out you get a selection of bleeps and sounds, and my key just has a button for a light.
Can anyone tell me if this is working correctly, which I am doubtful, or how should it operate/what is faulty.
Thanks in advance for any advice/help

Hi Geoff, the pre facelift cars like yours and mine came with a "brick" key fob. Do you have one of these? I press the red button once to lock and green once to unlock and immobilise the car. If I lock it by the key only the red led in the middle if the dash near the stereo stays lit for time, then starts to pulsate for a short period then goes off altogether. I wouldn't know what the correct format is, a lot of these cars were fitted with different systems from the factory so you could do with finding out which yours is.

Same as Grumps but my light/button used to flash on and off continuously when the car was locked with the "brick" key fob.

No my key has no red button, the centre button is a light to shine on key hole. The car locks and unlocks by turning the key. The car was built in July 98 and registered in Sept would that make a difference ?

Yep, I had the same key, sounds like you do not have the remotes for central locking and alarm.

The light indicates if your alarm is armed or not. Locking it with just the key will not activate the alarm.

Just the key and a small key for an immobiliser that under the bonnet or so I understand with sensors at each side of window screen at the top which are not working

If you have the house brick fob then this is what should happen - I have the full supplementary 3G EWS manual if you require more info.

Yep there the same as mine. If Geoff puts his vin into the checker will it state whether or not the car had an alarm fitted at the factory?

The alarms were an optional extra in the pre 1998/99 era (not sure of change-over date) and were fitted by UK dealers so will not show on original spec.

EDIT - HT beat me to it.

As far as I am aware @Grumpy, on early cars the alarms were not OEM but fitted by the dealers
Right, I must be one of the lucky ones h/t. My car had zero in the way of extras from build but does have the alarm that still works.

Hope so Grumps, don't let your car battery die though, like I did...knocked out the alarm and I could not be assed to strip the glove box and dash to get at the module, so just used the key, like @Geoff Crispin does.
I did the same and let the battery go flat! Through luck and locking/unlocking with the fob and key the alarm sparked back into life. No idea how I did it. She is now plugged into a CTEK battery charger on "trickle charge" if she's left for any period of time. Works great.

Geoff im sure there is a procedure to get the locking fob and programme it to your car to give it the remote locking function back.
Im sure any remote may do this of its type you just need one.
Ive looked at getting another key and the locksmith will do everything including the key the remote its programming on the drive for 120 all in i can even have the new type flip key and fob combined.
In your case to get the alarm fully functioning i think it requires the fob.

So they say, but not on early cars, key in what ever position in the ignition, tried that at my mates garage and the alarm worked once after that and then cut out again, only option, strip the glove box to get at the module and there is a horror story on this forum about doing that.
