Great work yet again. MOT tester will be smiling ear to ear just like Andys. My old Z3 2.8 tu was a facelift June 1999 so looks like BMW ran out of the single unit engine and started using tu early, I've heard of other pre's having the tu. That's my thinking anyway.
Great read yet again.

Roy.

I'm treating this build as not just paying someone to do it all for me, but to learn as I go along as well. Lee's posts are awesomely detailed and educational as well.

I find it really interesting how mechanics work and the techniques they use. I guess when you've changed the suspension 10+ times on a car it becomes quite easy! First time, not so much..... I Feel like such a n00b even though I am a software engineer and pretty handy at carpentry! :p
People often comment about "How Easy" I make things look when they watch me work, but, it works the other way too. People will be amazed how easy you make your chosen profession look. Software Technology = Alchemy to me. =))=))

Always read these extensive reports with some embarrassment, took me 2 days and needed to call help in just to remove 2 rear brakes hoses from their brackets. :( Hopefully the re fit will be less dramatic.
What was the issue Paul, removing the steel pipe from between the two hoses?

Tony.

ps. Sorry for OT Lee.;)

I too am amazed at what these guys do .... as Synclare states ‘in such a small space’ !
I’m wondering if the Zed crew can get my garage organised like theirs ?????
I am definitely planning another visit early in the year
The banter and advice is well worth the price of a breakfast ..... as for their technical and mechanical skills .... this is priceless !!

This thread should be renamed to

How to restore the underside of a Zed properly. And used as THE reference material for a complete job.

Then start a new one when the plastic bits get bolted on 😀

Just a suggestion mind...

So bringing this big project to a nice end we only had a few bits left to do the last couple of days.

First up was cleaning the engine itself, no point cleaning the front section as it’s removed when they fit the new clam.

Shortly after this It was first start, she ran better but still didn’t sound right, after reading fuel trims and poking around I found the maf to be reading incorrectly plus another vacuum leak. First test I did was unplug the maf to confirm and she ran so much better. Sourced a Bremi unit locally and all was well again.

Next I found the Vacuum leak down the rear in the boot well, I only found this because of the racket it was making. The vacuum line that comes from up front had a split. This supply’s the exhaust valve.

We then had an issue with the wheels and coilovers, due to the offset of the original wheels they clashed up front on the shock, luckily I have some winter wheels that are only a 215 wide. This is quite common when fitting coilovers they often sit close to the wheels, best way round this is to fit spacers.

Sporting some Zedshed winter wheels for the time being.

When we touched her down for the first time the front arch to floor was 260mm and the rear 295mm so the back needed to come down at least 20mm. Quickly back up in the air to make the adjustments.

Complimentary photo of the completed front. See how much I’ve had to wind up the shocks.

Then some shots of the rear. We’ve given all the hubs a coat of paint to keep the rust away.

Then a shot looking in while the car is down. You really can see the level of detail here.

Once I got the first drive out the way I had the tracking booked, much nicer have the steering wheel central.

After the tracking was done It was time for the extended drive with Zag2 in the car. Think I made him nervous, I was intentionally pushing the Zed in the wet to see how she responded other then the tail wagging she was totally fine so nothing major to report, only the cheap coilovers rebound too harshly and a stiff throttle cable. We’ll sort these later when she pops back.

Look forward to seeing the next chapter of this zed.

Thanks mate, awesome work all round. Still getting my head around all the improvements but hopefully many years to come of enjoying this car now. Whatever the form may be! Sorry for all the 100 questions about how everything works, but I love this stuff and feel far less like an amateur on how the car is engineered.

Your right, I did get a little nervous when you were wheel spinning in 3rd gear and laughing about how the back tires were so skinny in the poring rain, but to be fair it held the road very well!

I'll start a 'Part 2' thread in the Progress forum for the actual Kit Car build side of things.

Ooh the best part - the shakedown!

It’s an eye opener how well these handle with all this treatment. Especially on skinny rubber, very playful and controllable.
You can actually drive it without it trying to kill you, really well balanced once all this is sorted out.

Lee had that Z3M monster back then, full bore in 3rd in the wet and it was planted, I couldn’t believe it was a Z3, I just thought they all want to kill you as standard..

wait till you try it on in track, the limits are much higher than you think!

get ready to relearn the car and enjoy, very different drive now!

I wouldn't expect that rear spring to look so compressed when there is nothing in the car. There doesn't look to be much compression left.

Also, looking at the front, the "helper spring" has a little compression left when the suspension is free. I'll bet it's solid when the car is on the ground.

I'd be double checking that you have the right springs. They both look either too short, or too soft.

@Zag2 has done what I've done - and not skimpt on replacing worn out stuff. If it's anything like mine, it will end up costing a lot more than the kit :wideyed: .

Your observations are spot on, the rear spring compressions we find this to be the norm even on my HnR springs, in this case though the height adjuster will be adding extra strain.

The front shocks we suspect not to be the correct shocks we suspect this kit is for an E36 not a Z3. That’s what you get when you pay £199 but as said before it’s just to get the Zed moving and will be replaced with BC coilovers.

Drove home today and the car felt totally different (in a good way). So much fun to drive!! I had a great trip back the 30mins to Reading, overtaking cars like they were standing still :D

So what's the difference? I thought a E36 is the Z3?

Glad to hear it.

The front of the Z3 is E36 but rear is E30. There are some subtle difference between the models though, like geo, roll bar setups etc.
