Small update. We removed some more bits ready for powder coating plus lots of goodies arrived.

Old shocks well past it.
F4741502-891F-4790-96A5-57979F1ED8DC.jpeg

we fully stripped the front hubs and gave them a good clean up.

also fully stripped the rear arms and beam.

old beam bushes. Yuk :)
C95D6455-8FF7-435B-82D9-B28C787ED332.jpeg

It was also time to test out our new toy so we can remove the front subframes. Just to be safe we also touched on the jack underneath.

The subframe unbolted nicely but one of the steering rack bolts was seized solid so we decided to remove the subframe with the rack attached.

The offending bolt, the sleeve it passed through had bonded itself through corrosion

was no match for a blow torch and a big hammer.

Subframe now ready for coating

looks very odd under the front.
741E02DB-1033-4AB9-A675-99E9D3EDB1F2.jpeg

all in all not a very hard job, just a little messy because we had to remove it with the rack attached. We did take a huge delivery of parts today. Monday and Tuesday will be busy days for sure.

We also managed to fit a 50” tv with a Sky box plus a sound bar this weekend. Not sure if the shed productivity levels will drop though.

Bit of hassle with the DC Racing coilovers and some stock issues, so I've had to go with some cheaper ones off ebay.

Lee advises me that they are probably a load of old s***, but we don't have much choice with only a few days to go on this build.

Has anyone else used the cheaper suspension coilovers from ebay? There are a number of no name brands with what seems like reasonable reviews.

So this is the beginning of all the shinny bits going back on. First up was collecting everything from the coaters. The front subframe looks spot on this might be the norm going forward, only issue with doing the front subframe is we can’t touch the gearbox till it’s back, the engine is only supported at the rear by the gearbox bracket which we would need to remove to access the gearbox.

Now looking really smart upfront.

Whilst under the car it was a good time to remove the old fuel tank straps and assemble the new ones. Seeing as stock is now getting low we had to convert some M straps to fit this only takes 5 mines and all the bits were kindly provided by @Mazza .

new straps
E3B0BC55-5D1D-47A9-8851-AF0917BADADF.jpeg

the two holes left by the M bracket we filled with grease. This was due to some exposed metal from the countersunk screw. This will at least keep the weather out.
A63F9427-77C6-466B-9075-597AD4713D98.jpeg

Next up was rebuilding the trailing arms. These came up so well.
AE075613-DA1D-4722-AF6E-2B68181A2CA1.jpeg

New FAG bearing installed dust shields and hub.
B93855BD-6B1E-4AF0-8E99-5D5A4A5C0179.jpeg

Not forgetting the new plug to seal the arm from the weather.
A3815130-BA8F-42F9-96E4-16DD586F84CD.jpeg

The other side went together just as nice.

79CA7602-FC13-4FF2-9992-7A389F0740DE.jpeg

I would normally build the arms up more but the handbrake cables are yet to arrive.

Next up was the subframe this also looked so fresh. We fitted some new Febi/Bilstein bushes.

7952E2DF-C2C4-4E27-8447-0D2E59D0D774.jpeg

Once that was done we moved onto the diff. This needed the powerflex bush fitted, a good rub down and painting.
391A8191-25EC-43E7-BBA9-AB1EB7D12CE8.jpeg
Now coated with hammerite to seal it in.
E88133D3-1BB0-4B83-A262-672FFE4E0D29.jpeg

While we had the steering rack out it would be rude not to spruce her up a bit.
132D6893-EC72-4BD8-83F5-06B64D51A866.jpeg

another thing we’ve begun to do in the shed is refurb old callipers, they get stripped and sent away for blasting this allows us to offer like new quality callipers at a fraction of the price. So these have been grit blasted, hand painted and then fitted with new seals and pistons.
4B84F41B-0267-45A5-8FB1-7896492149A6.jpeg

Also we gave the half shafts a clean up.
FFF402BE-C15C-4B93-8F13-2A7A84093ABB.jpeg

looking forward to fitting these updated brakes. The discs are 286mm Mtec and the pads Ebc Yellow stuff.

Tomorrow will be the subframe assembly and re fitting. :)

Lovely its all coming together, some great looking bits there.

I forgot to mention I had an advisory in the MOT:
Rear Brake pipe corroded, covered in grease or other material both (1.1.11 (c))
I'm guessing that will be easy enough to clean or replace?

The old ones have already been binned. We have braided lines and new BMW hard lines to fit. That will take car of the Advisory’s.

Keeping the pace going we rebuilt the back end today. I love how the subframe looks when it’s all back together.

next we sealed the key areas on the chassis to future proof her from the weather. Lucky this Zed had minimal chassis corrosion so it was only a light brush down.

We also refitted the front steering rack we painted the power steering lines, not shown in this photo.

After lunch it was then time to refit the subframe to the car. She went in with ease.

Beam bushes now sat at the correct height. Very key to the handling of these z3’s.

while we wait for the last few bits to arrive for the rear we decided to press on and remove the gearbox. This was very tricky this time round, we had a bolt refusing to come out, if this snapped it would of been an engine out job to fix, luckily it played ball.

All these items will be rebuilt / replaced tomorrow.

Great to see the gearbox came out, is it a case of gently persuading those stuck bolts or some kind of special touch technique? :)

The car was pretty low when it came into you as you noticed right away. Was it the worn bushes causing that?

Hopefully the new suspension arrives tomorrow as well.

Great work as always.

Great job you guys at the Z shed are doing. Glad to see you’re doing the tank straps too, mine were totally shot but never mentioned on any previous mots. shame no one does a pattern part for these as you said they’re in short supply now.
Saw you were going to fit BC coil overs. I’m looking to drop the rear by at least 30mm but is there an adjustable set up you’d recommend?

There’s lots of ways of dropping the zeds, most will depend on what you plan to do with the car. If you want coilovers and don’t mind compromising the ride the BC’s are the best value for money, the build quality of these is great. If you want to keep the nice ride you’ll need to look at KW coil overs but these normally start around £1300+
Plenty out there.

Also if you are going to order them, make sure you give it a couple of weeks :D

They were all out of stock everywhere and it seems they are built to order in Taiwan and shipped over here by most companies. Takes time!

Even the eBay ones come from Germany...

That guy was hilarious, not sure why he felt he needed to say that but at least he got chance to tell someone other than his mum he has a community college certificate 🤣🤣

Fear not Dave, you're missing some context. A guy posted some tosh the Tribute Facebook group, and got rapidly corrected for doing so ;)
