Anyone had any block paving done??

Snoops do you not have those Romany types round your way who will offer to do Tarmac it at a very reasonable price.

Hi Snoopy Snoops,
Our next door neighbour had her drive all blocked paved a few years back and still looks good, she doen't suffer from weeds and stuff as the groundwork was prepared correctly and compacted, the blockwork was also sealed. Like Mr T said you get what you pay for so if going for blockwork spend as much as you can to get a decent job.
I looked at imprinted concrete a few years back and nearly went for it but after doing some googling its not as hard wearing as you think and there can be problems of the surface breaking up and wearing and looking shabby, you also have to consider adequate drainage as daft as it sounds I've read of people having this stuff put down then after a flash flood their house is suddenly under water.
Gravel is good, we had both our front and back gardens gravelled in teracotta which is looks attractive and has a good security aspect as anyone waking on it you hear them coming. I wouldn't have it where vehicles are used as it will get dragged all over the shop and you will be forever sweeping.
Have you considered tarmac? if done properly and in a nice colour like red or terocotta can look nice and neat.

Hi Tim, thanks for your reply...you make some good points and dragging the gravel everywhere and having to keep sweeping was why we lifted the 8T we have and that was just walking/sitting. I'm not really worried about weeds coming up we've already excavated to just above our current ground level and we've excavated 18" of clay already and more to go so if anything it would only be something that can take root if it's not sealed properly.
We're leaning towards blocks and I've just spoken to someone who's coming out this week to have a look at the job but whilst on the phone he asked me about the land now and said the preparation and foundations are key....so that's a good sign.
We've already had 2 quotes which are very different but we're in no hurry so we'll keep looking until we're 100% happy with our choice.
We don't really want tarmac - I think I see enough of the stuff at work and that's another product that needs to be done right or the "weather" will just get in and destroy it very quickly.

The only problem with tarmac is that within 6 months of it being laid, some utility company or other will want to dig a trench through it

Thanks for your comments guys and it helps us prepare for when people come out, knowing what they should be doing we will be in a position to ask the right questions should they not say up front they do it as standard.
Have to disagree slightly with the tarmac though, it absolutely has to go down right, any imperfections in the surface - water will get in, then the 1st freeze thaw will show you how destructive water can be - the countries roads are testament to that - we have a number of newly surfaced major roads that have had to have remedial work - but they looked perfect when they were re-surfaced last year.
