(Edit) I see you have a 2002. My DD in winter is a 2012 4x4 Access Cab. (not one of the years affected by recall).

I hope you are over at TacomaWorld.com-- There are hundreds of 1st & 2nd-Gen owners that have had the frame warrantied and lots of stories about exactly how that process happened. Generally Toyota is bending to the good will side and replacing frames, even those they had previously inspected as good.

Good luck and let us know how it works out.
I 'll go to that site and do some research. The Toyota case manager called me this morning and said that the recall for my truck ended in 2011 before I owned it. There is nothing he can do...............................Frankie

Yes that’s tough but as it’s so bad do you have a claim against the seller? Particularly if it is a dealer.

Sorry to here that @FRANKIE. New truck on the cards then. Maybe something other than a Toyota. Why don't you get an F150? Very popular over there I hear.

That would be like jumping into the fire. I've had 2 F150s and they rust like crazy. Especially the brake lines. Not as bad as the Toyota. The Toyota frame was manufactured by a company (Dana?) that put out a poor product. Toyota sued them for it. Toyota started using better frames. I'll say this for Toyota, they worked hard to correct the problem. I just didn't hear about it in time. Several other car manufactures had sever rust problems and really left the customer holding the bag. Every part of that truck, with the exception of the frame, was nothing short of excellent. It is perhaps, oddly enough, the reason I never got to see the frame rusting. Any other car or truck that I owned I got to see the underside of as I was making repairs. Laying under the vehicle puts you up close and in your face with the bottom of the vechile. Not the Toyota truck. I owned that for almost 3 years and never ONCE had to go under the truck for any repairs. This spring I was planning to do the brakes and shocks. Never had to replace any belts, hoses plugs. Pep Boys auto centers offer an oil change with a filter for $19.95. I can't do it that cheap myself. It is probably what it would cost me. So I had them do it. That means I didn't even have the chance to get under the truck to drain the old oil. Now that they've fixed the frame problem several years ago, who wouldn't I but another? I must have had 10 people ask me if I wanted to sell my truck in the last year. Poor saps probably didn't know about the rust problems with my year either. Ford or Chevy trucks are worthless after a few years. Not Toyota. They really hold their value (except mine). This time I'll buy one from Florida or Arizona or Nevada. No salt on the roads.
The only positive thing that I can draw from this whole thing is that I'll have to use the Z3 every day. Not in the rain of snow. Then I use my wife's car........................Frankie

That sucks Frankie. But take heart-- if you posted for sale on Tacomaworld you'd have people bidding on it. Or, if you have the time, part it out. People out there have a good frame and need the rest, LOL. Not sure what you paid for the truck a few years ago but hopefully you won't have to take a bath on the resale.

Water under the bridge, but an important lesson here... Run the VIN of any used car you are interested in purchasing through the OEM sites, check the online resources/forums, or even pay to have a Carfax run. The frame inspection/recall program was huge for Toyota in the 1st-gen Tacoma like Frankie's, and also affected the early years of the 2nd-Gen. My friend participated in the Toyota buyback of her 2001 and funded a newer truck.

Good luck my friend.

The frame is almost broken in half. When I was at the Toyota dealership, they begged me not to drive the car home. It's just a complete mess.
I’d get a second opinion. They coold just be trying to cover their behind telling you not to drive it.
Main dealers have been know to tell a lie or two...

Where they are breaking on trucks in the UK is right behind the "cab" , is that where yours is in danger of breaking Frankie?
Look at these Nissan Navaras and pathfinders,

Tony, just curious, but is the rust confined to just that area where they break, or is the whole of the chassis covered in rust?
Colin.

Got under the truck and took these pics. The first pics are the (our) driver's side or left side facing forward, then the passenger side (right)....

My God Frankie, that is incredible mate. With the UK M.O.T. system that would have been off the road a LONG time ago mate. No wonder they begged you not to drive it.:eek::eek:
