Its alive!

Starts and idles. Thats a big relief on its own after the work thats gone into it.

Quite a bit more to do before taking it to the tuner to get the ECU programed. But at least it starts and warms up.

Everything is working better then expected.

The ECU has a very rough tune based on an E46 just so it had a chance to start. And that it did. Scared me senseless as it fired up right away.
Runs really lean and will not go above 2k at the moment until its tuned

Tach is working. No strange lights. Alternator works. Have not checked the door locks or anything yet but hopefully thats all fine.

O2, oil pressure, boost and exhaust temp gauges all work. I went with twin smaller electric fans so there was more room around the water pump and they work fine.

Only two problems at the moment.
Since the turbo is very low the oil drain is tricky. Got a bit of smoke so may have an issue. But ibhave an idea how to improve it.
And I can't find the plastic cover for the right side fog light. Took the light out when I was working to fit the air filter and now can't find it. Air fter is behind the front bumper and fog light. Tucked in very well. It will get good cold air and is protected from road filth. Just have to stay away from deep puddles.

It is loud since there is only the dump pipe going in a splitter with a pair of 2.5 inch outlets under the drivers feet. We start fabricating the rest of the exhaust this week.

It has an exhaust system and is now back on the ground and moved under her own power for the first time. After being in the garage all winter it needed a serious wash.

Need tidy up the interior. Have ot scheduled to go to the tuner late in the month.

The cooler worked out really well. There is a small power steering cooler installed just in front below the number plate.

Some good progress today but not finished. At least it runs and didn't blow up.

First visit to the tuners. It now fires on all six cylinders and makes whooshy noises. Wired in the boost controller and fixed s few issues. The ecu wiring schedule had plus 2 and 3 swapped so it wS running like a dog.

Two issues to fix now before taking it back.

We can hear the idle air valve making noise but it doesn't seam to work. Anyone have experience with these?

Since its a low mount turbo my drain is very horizontal. Oil is backing up and the car smokes like a chimney. Thought I may have a problem with this and I did. Can either make the drain better or go to a scavenging pump.

Also looks as if the rear main seal is leaking. Inhave one here but don't look forward to pulling the gearbox.

All fun and games but its moving forward. Didnt make any power runs yet and just worked at getting it running properly.

Some progress made and some more failures.

I now have a scavenge pump on the turbo so the smoke has gone away. Rear main has been replaced and the engine itself is leak free.

They had it back on the dyno yesterday and started setting a base tune. With very conservative timing it made 330hp without even getting to full revs. Turbo is on full boost at 3k so all that side looks good.

To fit the scavenge pump I had to fabricate a collection manifold on the bottom of the turbo with a line coming off for a vent. This way the pump is not pulling solid against the turbo feed. For some reason when the car was up on boost at higher revs it started blowing oil out of this vent line. I had plans to plumb this event into the engine after it gets fully tuned but need to figure out why the oil is still backing up.

Will collect the car tomorrow and start having a look.

Spoke to several people and there is no issue with the vent. Its normal that the turbo will put some pressure in the vent line when running under boost. Just need to tie it back into the engine so any burped oil goes where it should.

Tune is not finished and I have to take it back. But its good enough to drive for now and I had it out for run. Fantastic and dives normal until you have your foot in it and the revs start going up above 2500. It really comes alive and the smiles come out.

Dyno numbers are good but will get better. 330hp at 5200rpm and a little over 460Nm of torque at 3300.

Only problem now is the tuners are really busy and i have to wait a few weeks until it goes back.

Had the car out for its first big trip today. Sorry no pictures but it was a lovely long drive with the top down.

All the turbo issues are sorted and she is running strong. Passed her mot with flying colors this morning and had to visit a vessel for work. So drove straight from the Mot station in Great Yarmouth to Hull. Nothing like a four hour drive to test if things are working.

Car was fantastic. Even in fifth you just touch the throttle and you can hear the turbo pick up and its off. If anyone has driven the B roads of the Lincolnshire Wolds from Boston to the Humber airport they will know how fun these are.

Car is still booked for its final tune at the end of the month. Besides some refinement i will get them to settle the pops and bangs. My only complaint is the boy racer noises on overrun.
