Is it not that the door opens if you pull inside door unlock handle twice? i thought it how this works, but not sure will it do so with faulty module. but i think it is pure mechanical thing. i am under impression it does. can't remember though if i ever opened passenger door with main battery disconnected.

A locked door needs the interior handle pulling twice to open, once to unlock and then again to open. With the GM5 module, you can easily replace the actual relays that fail, not a difficult job if you are competent with a soldering iron.

First post here, have had a Z4 since new, got imprisoned in my Z4 the other day after a combination of it appears the GM5 unit failed and a loose battery connection. Anyway in this situation you become a prisoner in your own car, both door handles and locks would not work, key in car with me so no one could help from outside. End result, I had to kick the passenger window out from the inside to get out of car.
On first reflection this sounds amusing, but on consideration, could in some circumstances be absolutely lethal.
I contacted BMW U.K. as regards this matter because I consider it a lethal design fault of the car, their response was absolutely shocking, basically politely they said it is no longer under warranty and they do not care about the safety issue and thus consider the matter closed. My car is probably going up for sale or being sent to the scrapper as I now consider it a death trap.

t-tony, the reason why I could not open the roof or windows was because there was no power. Like many I suspect, I had the roof manual release handle stored safely in the boot.
The power worked when I got in the car but the passenger door did not unlock due to an unknown to me at the time GM5 failure. I recycled the locks to unlock the passenger door, both doors locked then power failed, (due to it materialises a loose battery connection, I guess my sitting in the car must have moved the unsucure connection), result being you are a prisoner in your own car!
The reality is that with a rear end shunt there is a high probability that the battery will become disconnected, if you also have a GM5 failure then you are potentially a vulnerable prisoner in your own car.

Best make sure that battery terminals are secure then. I didn't realise you had a power failure, reading the post I thought it was just the locking had failed. Either way, info worth knowing. Thanks.
