Z1 puncture...

Went to go for a sneaky drive in the Z1 today - a bit of "me time" - and horror of horrors one of the rear tyres was flat as a pancake. Nice screw head protruding through the middle.
Took me nearly an hour to remember where the anti theft wheel nut tool was. Looked in every orifice.
For future reference it's in a full tool kit in the boot lid. On the plus side it all looked in mint condition.
The jack, wheel wrench, wheel chock (and towing eye) were where they should be in a compartment in the side of the boot.
Found a small hidden storage compartment behind the drivers seat too. That will make up for the lack of a glove box in future!
Punctures can sometimes help me learn a bit more about the car!

I did the typical man thing. Looked everywhere & then read the manual!
 
It gets worse.
Turns out the tyres which have plenty of tread on them by the way date back to... ahem... 2002.
Looks like someone hasn't done too many miles in these puppies over the years.
Anyway, due to age, tyre co says not safe to repair (there is evidence of cracking down the tread cavities) so am gonna have to change both rears to Toyo TR1's cos Dunlop have stopped making the 9000's that are on there...

Caveat Emptor as someone once said. :(
 
OK so I finally got around to putting the second rear wheel back on. But for those of you who like this sort of thing I took a couple of pictures of the rear suspension arrangement.

Anyway, then took it out for a spin to check the tyre pressures and wheels.great day for it down at Sidmouth promenade & then through Ottery St Mary. All seems well and the new rubber is great.

May well treat her to some new fronts too, before heading to Zed Fest in August...

Must be something in the air, found a screw in my rear offside tyre when I got back from my run out, took the wheel off put some soapy water on it, no bubbles, great, thought it hadn't gone through, took it out and down it went, guess where I'm goin tomorrow.
 
That suspenion looks interesting- it seems it has an extended bump stop that makes contac when resting.
Wonder why it had a massive 'dish' for the bottom of the spring to sit. Must have darin holes to let water out, might be worth checking they clear and that water doesn't just collect in there (although doesn't look like this car sees any wet weather!)
 
There was a green Z1 at Ragley Hall today. No comfort for you but it had a full compliment of inflated tyres. Think I have some pics which I'll post shortly.

By comparison the Z3 spring just sits atop the spring pad/bump stop so any water/muck just washes off.
And mine goes out in the wet, see the difference!

That type of bottom arm is used on many 3 series cars, and indeed many other makes of car. They also sit on rubber pads which tend to block any drainage points.
