It`s time to change the oil. I`ve read somewhere 3.0 engines are prone to use oil but using a certain grade reduces consumption. I`ve no idea what was put in last time but it`s not needed topping up after 5000 miles and I`d like to keep it that way. Any advice or personal experience would be great. Thanks

I always rely on Opie Oils aka @oilman for help and advice and they're very good.
Tell them what you use the car for I.e if you do the odd track day for example and they'll recommend a range of oils.

I use 5w30 semi synthetic oil, oil & filter are changed every year irrespective of mileage which is never more than 4/5k. Only had to top the oil up once after a week of thrashing around Corsica.
Can’t see the benefits of using fully synthetic oil unless you are doing track days....
I’m sure many folk will think differently but nothing beats regular oil changes.

The OEM oil in the 3.0 was Castrol Edge 0W 30, I have always used it for 10 years and 102,000 miles. I uses a little bit but no more than about a litre in 10,000 miles. It is changed every year.

I use 5w-40 which suits within my area, temperature at about -5 to 35 degrees C. Look at the table it may be helpful. I could use others. I wait until what I want is on special [usually half price] and buy enough for the next service. I usually use Mobil 1 full synthetic as it meets BMW001 standards... and I usually have some left over from the previous service, but no other reason.

I have also deleted my fan so the oil temperature gets to 105 degrees, with the fan on it reaches 94.

Did first oil change on mine this Christmas just gone (bought Feb 17). I put in 6litres of 5w40 el cheapo TripleQX from ECP because I was skint but wanted fresh oil for the long drive to my parents. Car was running much much better afterwards. But the stuff that was changed out was thick and black so no real surprise (Castrol Edge 5w30 apparently, according to old receipts). Engine's been purring on the cheap stuff since. But I do less than 5k and will change the oil annually regardless, so I'm not too fussed about a brand oil, more that it's clean and fresh:thumbsup:
