Ok. I'll come clean. What happens is, when the car has a serious rear end impact and the car deforms, the spike on the axle beam punctures the tyre to stop the axle beam from being bent forwards and rupturing the fuel tank.

Well, no it wouldn't, that's just the point. It was the spare wheel which caused the danger and that's why it needed to get punctured vey quickly in a rear end impact.That’s assuming that all old fiestas’ carry a spare.........otherwise BOOOOOOM!
