That is the secondary air pump used for emission control in the USA. It runs for 30 seconds on start up putting air into the exhaust. Totally useless here in the UK. Can be removed with no issues, you just need to blank off the valve at the manifold and the vacuum hose.
Why does my 2.8 have this with the washer bottle up near the windscreen? All the cars I see online have the washer bottle at the front left

Why does this vehicle have this? All the cars I have seen on car and classic have the washer bottle there.
It was fitted for the US market for emissions purposes. It is not needed here, you can remove it and bin it. Your car will still pass the MOT emissions test. The reason the the washer bottle is up near the windscreen is because moving there left space behind the right hand headlight to mount the Aux. Air Pump (proper title) or smog pump.

Hello Tony
So why do nearly all cars I see for sale have the washer bottle at the front and no emission control item? Is mine some sort of US import? I know they were all built in US
Thank you
Richard

Hi Richard,
Mine is exactly the same as yours. With the washer bottle near the windscreen. I have taken out the smog pump as again same as yours ...not fixed down !! Really easy to do.

My 1.9 has the washer bottle at the front ....its just a case of different models had slight variations.

This is what you remove.....like yours, the rubber mounts had broken away from the bracket.

By the way....you don't have to remove the front end to do it ...... =))

I had removed mine and blanked the small rubber vac line but when I did the M54 manifold swop I found the the hose was all perished and split at the manifold end so removed it completely, you don’t want air leaks.
