What is the round item in the 7 o’clock position? It fits through a round hole and has rubber feet.
I can lift it out. Should it

do that?
Thanks

That is the secondary air pump used for emission control in the USA. It runs for 30 seconds on start up putting air into the exhaust. Totally useless here in the UK. Can be removed with no issues, you just need to blank off the valve at the manifold and the vacuum hose.

It should be held down by 2 x 13mm bolts if I recall right. Can you post an overhead picture please?

Tony.

Like mine, I'm guessing the rubber feet have detached from the bracket Tony.

It was nuts on studs, not bolts as I remembered. . Been a while.

Best thing to do with it is remove it and bin it Richard. It isn't needed here, only in California. Remove the valve from the Cylinder head (2 nuts/bolts), plug up the thin vacuum pipe with a bolt pushed into the end and replace the valve with a blanking plate (which I can supply if you want one). Then disconnect the 2 wire harness from the pump motor and tie it back out of harms way.

Thanks. I am still doing a lap of honour after getting the washer bottle out and back in and finding the washers actually started working. Might need to build up to that

Next job. Replace a side light cover and fix the plate that holds the power hood buttons.
Also need to replace this gear knob and get the a/c blowing cold.

Careful not to smack your self in the face when pulling the gearknob off. It has happened.

Removed it once without doing that but don’t rule out doing it next time. Do you know the reason for the M logo on it and the steering wheel.
Hope you don’t mind me asking a few questions

Don't mind at all Richard. My Z3 came from the factory with the "Chrome Pack" accessories, does yours have a chrome cap on the light switch or chrome side gills? If you can find a BMW Vin. Decoder site that works (try on Google) you can enter your vin. and find out the spec. which the car left the factory with.

Could just be various add-on ///M badges then Richard, my Z3 had the badges on the steering wheel, Gear knob and road wheels. That Gear knob could also have been one which illuminated with the sides lights too (if it doesn't still?)
