As a bit of preventative maintenance we are thinking of getting the water pump changed on our Z, may as well change the thermostat & hoses at the same time. Can anyone tell us, a) Does the water pump fitted to the M44 engine have the self destructing plastic impeller ?
b) Can anyone recommend what brand of water pump we should get as we want it to last another 25 years ?
c) Is there anything else that should be done/replaced at the same time as our local garage will be doing the work so don't want to end up paying for anything to be done twice ?

Thanks in anticipation, Ian & Sue.

You could end up with a long list Ian.
a) you will not know until you take old pump out - they varied. I changed mine years ago having read the horror stories and when it came out it was a metal impeller.
b) I fitted a Meyle on the first change and it only lasted 25k when bearings failed - to be fair a seized tensioner may have contributed to its' early demise. I fitted another Meyle but only low mileage at present so can't judge.
c) as you have said thermostat and check hoses. Also check belt condition, tensioner roller (although that can be done separately) and check expansion tank and drain whilst it is stripped.
Good Luck

Thanks Jonco, we had the tensioner done just after we got the car so we know that's ok & although the belt is ok will change it anyway while things are in bits. Meyle was one of the brands that we thought was a possibility. Had a quick look on europarts the other day & 3 came up, Drivemaster, Circoli & Airtex, never heard of any of them.

Sue & Ian.

I’ve used Quinton Hazel pumps on 4 BMW, no problems.
I replace the bolts with stainless, had lots of problems with the standard ones either rounding or shearing.
Thanks, will check them out.
