It's getting rare in any branch of engineering these days to repair a faulty part, most will replace with new or even a "reconditioned", secondhand part.

It has to be seriously f****d for me to replace it, but I'm not having to charge the customer for my time.

If I charged out the vanos overhaul I did last winter at £25 per hour, it would be well over £1500, but a £200 cable was repaired for 60p and the whole job only cost a few hundred quid.

It was the £200 cable that took most of the time. Dremmelling it apart, reverse engineering the internals, test-and-adjust the diodes, and putting it all back together must have taken about 40 hours.

Once these cars get to the stage where spares are as rare as hen's teeth, a U/S vanos solenoid cable will write-off the car as very few would even attempt to do what I did.

That said, when they get REALLY rare, the few that do survive will be owned by millionaires who wouldn't even blink at £1000 for a cable if it gets the car back on the road.

You mean that it's not like Car SOS and Wheeler Dealers in real life - gutted:(
I'm restoring a 68 mk2 Cortina 1600e shell at the minute and its tedious to say the least, its 1 owner with 40k on the clock, been in a garage for 30 years.

Suppose it's like anything, feels like fun until you actually have to do it everyday
Exactly, believe it or not I'm a taxidermist, I used to thoroughly enjoy creating life like mounts as a hobby and spent hours on end in my studio, I then started to make good money doing it and it all of a sudden became a chore so I gave it up.
