Simplicity is what's missing in the motor trade these days. Testing that old Cav on Saturday makes you realise just how much cars have changed in 30 years. Oh God, I feel old .................. ;)

I gave up work 10 years ago, I was in Construction, and even then it was easier to find 20 graduates than one decent tradesman.
The education system seems to put no importance on learning a trade , just pushing university's.

That's a fact. My lad is in his third year at College on a mechanics course, he's now a qualified mechanic and now doing diagnostics and MOT. He's the only one with a 100% attendance record and is consistently miles ahead of his peers. Because of the current education system that require children to be in full time education until they are 18 most on the course are there just to be there yet rarely attend but tragically all seem to have passed thus far. These "mechanics" could be fixing your car! It's a sad state of affairs :(

These days it's a Technician & a fitter. As it's all on the laptop screen. If it's not they shrug the shoulders and say it needs replacing. Sad but true as getting more through is the name of the game.

In the 90's my Merc 230CE windscreen wiper started to play up, I took the car to a well known Merc indy where the mechanics were all old school old boys.
When I picked the car up, the chap said he had taken the unit to bits, cleaned it up and put it back together and it was working 100% now, all I had to pay for was his time spent on the job.
I said I did not know that was possible and he said that he did it all the time, all the company's with Merc taxis used him/them.
Sadly, these chaps are no longer around now, most of them retired a long time ago.

A couple of months ago was at the Merc stealers and asked how they deal with this problem.
Was told, "oh, that will be a complete new unit sir"........

Would you rather pay 4x Main Dealer Hourly Labour Rate, or 1x Main Dealer Hourly Labour Rate + 1x Part Cost?

If time is cheap (eg DIY), it's a no brainer. If time is valuable, it's a no-brainer.

It is a shame that no-one will work for dirt cheap labour rates any more, as they have all gone bust:rolleyes:. I wonder why.

A local garage changed a wheel bearing in a hub for me the other day. I gave him the hub and he had to pull the old bearing out and press the new one in. It would have taken between 30-60 mins of his time. He only wanted a fiver. I gave him a tenner and thought that even that was a bargain.

Not this garage, its family owned and is one of the oldest in town and only deals with Merc's.
They are old school, they take on young lads and the old guard, whats left of them, train them up.
This company has a reputation to keep up as, as I posted above, most taxi company's use them and there are a lot of them all running Merc's over here and also, being only 20 mins from Amsterdam airport, with the biggest taxi ranks in the Netherlands, they are always fully booked up.

Do they still strip down stuff to repair, or do they replace with 2nd hand, or new?

If they are really that busy, I doubt that they can afford the time to strip it down.

All depends what the customer want's, Taxi company's want quick turn around.
If you ask them to check things out and give them some time to do it, they will try their best to strip and repair your used parts rather than sticking new parts on, this is why they are so busy as that is what Joe public prefers to hear.
