Z3 2.8
Hi
After Introducing myself, I've finally started the work on the little black Z3, I've nicknamed "Chelle" after her reg number..

My background is in the engineering business, primarily for tyres. I've also spent years in motorsport, and also had three years buying and selling cars full time. So, I'm handy enough with spanners and fortunately still have some trade accounts and contacts.

A week ago, I saw a nice 2.8 Z3, advertised on a site selling insurance salvage cars. The car has been put on the HPI register as a Cat C, meaning they decided not to repair it as they didn't think it was economical.. Madness but hey.. I think I've got lucky (she was not a lot of money...)

Basically it looks like something had fallen on the bonnet. It's goosed.
The car also needed 4 tyres, as the old ones were damaged and cracked
The front bumper was also scratched, and had a small crack on the bottom lip.
The hood needs reproofed as it's seeping water through it.. It's green and mouldy too!
And she needs the roof looking at too.. not opening..
Brakes need a good clean up
I want nice big summer tyres, but with winter starting I have time

But she's sweet sounding, leather and paintwork otherwise look clean. And big bonus is 55K miles! (god knows if I can trace SH.. as there's none in the car..)

Anyway, today saw the start of the project, so you'll see the car sat outside, then endo of play tonight with the old bonnet off, and a new (ised one off another car the same size) one on..

I plan to keep you updated.. wish me luck..

Hi again from Canada!! Looks like you got a good one going. I'm finding these cars fairly easy to work on so you should easily get a handle on everything! Enjoy , JIM

Well.. she's finally back from the bodyshop.. I'm a few couple of hundred quid lighter, but she looks good..

I also found this article on the t'interweb showing how she got damaged. Weird, but she's looking much fitter now

So now I'm needing to fix
  • wobbly drivers seat.. new bushes needed
  • hood needs cleaned and reproofed as it's seeping water..Renovo products ready to go
  • summer wheels to buy.. may use MV 18" alloys...
  • Leak from top seal.. I may see if the plug in the top of the a-frame..
  • Alarm fob not working.. hope it's just a battery..
  • What kidney grilles.. I need to refit the old ones, but I'm after a set of carbon ones..

Wow! That car has a history like no other. Glad you were able to find the story and get the car looking so good. Check eBay UK I believe there's a set of carbon fibre grills on auction now. I've been looking myself as someone did a H&R 7 days after my car finally showed up in my driveway. JIM

Looking good mate. Keep it up.

Tony.

Great shots, very interesting. So that's how they do it. Read the article. Shame for the lady owner but great for yourself. a lovely Zed given the chance of a new life.
