When you sell a car, say mid month you loose I month tax and as you now cannot transfer the tax the new owner has to pay tax from the beginning of the month so DVLA wins twice over. clever people politicians???
And its certainly not like it couldn't be changed. When we sell a house here, the real estate tax might have been paid for that quarter of the year. The new owner, if he buys the house in the middle of the quarter, pays the old owner, at settlement, the remaining amount of the tax for the quarter that he now owns the house. The old owner doesn't lose the remaining quarter, and the new owner doesn't have to pay the government from the beginning or middle or the rest of the quarter, he has paid the old owner back the unused portion of the that quarter. Why can't this be done with car tax? If you pay a registration fee for a year in this state and the car is in an accident and you don't replace the car and transfer the registration, you lose it. Why? You paid good money for it, it should be yours. Frankie

By the way, I just checked my confirmation email sent by DVLA where it states I made my application on, and I quote, 01/12/2014 00:00:38. That is 38 seconds into December. Can you believe that?

Someone in Motor Vech. must have pumped his fist in the air and shouted: "Yes. We did it again!!!!!!!". Frankie

That's probably the way it is too Frankie, more's the pity. Mark is correct in what he says re not sorning but over here if a car is taxed it also has to be insured too. In my case a total of almost £50 per month for a "toy" which in winter is not the best car to be using it has to stay in the garage.:(

Roll on April.!!

Yep I get that Paul. Here's what happened, a week last Sunday, the 30th Nov. I applied for SORN and tax refund. After filling parts of the forms online it asked " Do you want the SORN to start from the 1st of November?" Honest me thought, no, because I've used the car through Nov. OK? So I waited till 2 mins past midnight and the form had changed to " Do you want the SORN to start from 1st December?" That's better I thought, I will get Dec, Jan, Feb and March tax back. But NO I only got 3 months back through being honest. I rang DVLA this evening and the lady eventually told me that as I applied in December( by 2 mins) I forfeited that months tax. There is no warning that you have to make your SORN before the end of the last day of the month on the site. She said all I can do is "write" to DVLA at Swansea and explain this all to the revenue department and see if they will refund to me that which I think was taken by a deceptive and devious system. OK we're only talking about less than £20 but it's the principal here, how many others have fallen into this trap and lost money.

Finally got around to arranging online for monthly direct debit. Has to be said the whole process was straightforwards, and completed in less than 5 minutes.

So that's me committed to c£25 a month for the next 12 months. Can't help but think this will work much better for me as I'm hopeless at putting money aside for the 6/12 monthly payments. Always end up spending it on something slightly more shiny, and panicking when the reminder arrives!

Actually they used to add 10% for paying six monthly, Now they only add 5% whether its monthly or six monthly, this is being paid for by the 'double tax' on a month.
The thing is to sell your car and make the buyer wait to the first day of the month. You sell it and cancel your tax on the last day of the month, they pick it up and tax it on the first.
There is a way around the rules to beat the 1 month double tax, but everyone now benefits that use the monthly/ six monthly option.

To beat the rules you just need to know how to play their game ----
SORN on the last day of the month. re-tax on the first.
Sell it whenever, but buyer only collects it on the first.
and in the meantime benefit from the smaller premium on monthly options.

Never Sorn a vehicle, I feel I'd be missing out on a nice day, went out the other day top off, beanie on, heated seats great fun, although fellow motorist thought another escapee from the asylum :)
As per Gary I'm doing the monthly payment on all vehicles that need taxing, great idea, it don't hurt so much :)
