Has anyone else tried the on-line sorn/refunding outstanding road tax system. If so any issues and are you happy with the amount refunded?

Errrrrr no. I dont sorn .
Did not work for me Tony as it would not except my location.
All I know is when I changed cars the refund for the old car worked fine but that was just sending off the relevant part of the V5.

When my little FLN was written off by the insurance I applied for the refund on the road fund and it arrived in just over a week. An odd amount but they obviously refund the full unused months. It helped me pay the road fund on the replacement Z3. So not complaining.

Yep I get that Paul. Here's what happened, a week last Sunday, the 30th Nov. I applied for SORN and tax refund. After filling parts of the forms online it asked " Do you want the SORN to start from the 1st of November?" Honest me thought, no, because I've used the car through Nov. OK? So I waited till 2 mins past midnight and the form had changed to " Do you want the SORN to start from 1st December?" That's better I thought, I will get Dec, Jan, Feb and March tax back. But NO I only got 3 months back through being honest. I rang DVLA this evening and the lady eventually told me that as I applied in December( by 2 mins) I forfeited that months tax. There is no warning that you have to make your SORN before the end of the last day of the month on the site. She said all I can do is "write" to DVLA at Swansea and explain this all to the revenue department and see if they will refund to me that which I think was taken by a deceptive and devious system. OK we're only talking about less than £20 but it's the principal here, how many others have fallen into this trap and lost money.

I know the feeling as I applied for the new road fund right at the end of November and the old system would have given me from December but the new system gave me from the beginning of November. So I lost a complete month when purchasing the new tax even though the car had tax until Feb 2015 I could not use it. So yes I agree with you.. they are having a laugh at the motorists expense.
When you sell a car, say mid month you loose I month tax and as you now cannot transfer the tax the new owner has to pay tax from the beginning of the month so DVLA wins twice over. clever people politicians???
Exactly this is why the motoring organisations were saying the Gov will make more money when they introduced it and the DVLA said it would be minimal. Reality is when you sell a car with part tax still valid it's not transferable to the new owner, the new owner has to tax it so they get that month twice.

Back in March I applied online for tax after having my zed scorned over winter, I applied for it 3-4 days before the end of the month thinking it would automatically be dated from 1st April but oh no they took it from 1st March. I rang the DVLA but they said I could send my tax disc back with a covering letter explaining and they would refund as it wasn't quite end of month but advised this could take a couple of week so I would not be taxed for that period having to display a tax disc back then and by the time I could reapply it was probably not worth it so yes I was somewhat annoyed as I was due to go on Bills cruise early April hence decided to just lump it and effectively lost a months tax.
I have sorned again this winter and applied a couple of days before December and I am sure it said sorn status would start from 1st December. Anyway got my cheque the other day and got what I expected but I certainly learned a lesson so that when I retax it for April it will be on 1st April just to make sure it is from then it starts.

Absolutely and I was aware of that but the reason I've lost money is through deceit and not far short of theft. I will write to the DVLA if only to see how they wriggle out of it. Of course I could be pleasantly surprised.

By the way, I just checked my confirmation email sent by DVLA where it states I made my application on, and I quote, 01/12/2014 00:00:38. That is 38 seconds into December. Can you believe that?
