Well my dream of owning a soft top began in the mid 70's when a man local to us was selling a selection of sports cars. My brother-in-law bought his MG B Roadster and was going to take the Triumph Spitfire (with hard top). However I couldn't raise the cash and ended up missing out. A year or so later I bought another spit complete minus engine and gear box, bought all new body panels, rear wings sills etc.
Totally stripped and rebuilt the chassis, bought yet another car complete with hard top and wire wheels. Also acquired from my father-in-law a full race Triumph engine and gearbox from out F2 stock car.
About this time the piece of land we own and live on today came available for purchase. Bye Bye Spitfire.
Thirteen years ago a friend from work emigrated to New Zealand and left with me his 3 year old MX5 to sell for him and to forward the money on to him, it needed to come in to work to have two new tyres when I sold it and Shirl brought it in, now she's hooked, a few years later after her mum left her some money she wanted a nicer car and asked what she should buy. I simply said get what you want, so she did, a 56 plate MK3 MX 5. Not long after I bought a Eunos for a fun car and what a lot of fun it was too but eventually I wanted something nicer and found my car for sale on eBay near Sheffield. That was 5 years ago now. I still love it now as much as I did when I drove it home, and I'm still smiling.:D

Tony.

My friend Allan at work was retiring early and had bought the Z 13mths ealier in 2006,paid £9500 for it and asked me if I was interested in buying it for £8250 as he intended to go off round the world next month, I couldn't afford it and he then said would I be prepared to look after it with the use of it. Having never ever thought I would or could buy or afford to run one I agreed, he then asked me to give him my opinion on the Z, so off we went with me at the wheel, after nearly an hour I was totally smitten and drove to my banks car park, went in to see how much I was worth and came out with £6500 which he gladly accepted. Dropped him off and drove the long way home, wife loved the car but hated the colour, took her to Le Mans in it that year for the classic,1400 mls and Z never missed a beat. Friend came back 2009 popped in to see me saying he didn't miss work or England at all but did miss the Z, he went back to Thailand but sadly died there last year. :(

My story has been told several times over in various threads and it's delivery was celebrated like the birth of one's first child. Trinity, my then 8 yr old granddaughter came to me one day suggesting we buy a project car. Either a Z3 or Ford F150 pickup. Having just retired after 40 yrs at Canadapost the budget was pretty small. Priced out Zeds in NA and found them way over what I could afford, so started investigating importing from another country and what our gov't regs were. The Z3 fit the must be 15 yrs old minimum so checked out European sources for LHD. Still too rich so hit eBay UK. Found a 97 1.9 in a colour Trinity loved( because there were no pink ones available) and contacted the owner. The auction ended before I could come anywhere close to sorting through the red tape. Well after a month of getting myself up to speed and not finding anything that grabbed me to buy I contacted the PO and found they had a deposit on the car but the person hadn't come back so it was again for sale. Negotiations began but the owner had a heart attach. Eventually, we did get things sorted and a valet service to decontaminate the car through Chris at Summit a forum member. Sean sent me 153 pics of the service as he progressed which showed me the car was rust free but needed tires and a hood. The car was finally picked up and put on the ship to come to Canada where my friend cleared customs for me and stored the car while I found a co to transport it to my home in the middle of Canada. I've left out lots of details to keep this to the Reader's Digest size version. The car will become Trinity's at Graduation so she has something to work towards as well as learning how to maintain and work on it in the meantime. JIM
I followed , live, the struggle for this project and we all know that more struggle bring more satisfaction , at the end!
But I'm more impressed by the Trinity's commitment ! Hat off!:)
Her reward will even bigger, at Graduation, while the car will have a history as a family project and above all that it will be a historical vehicle (having more than 30 years;)). So a good investment as value for feelings and money!:)

When our daughter was young we had an MGBGT, as she was small enough to fit on the back seat. We had many enjoyable years attending rallies with MG Owners Club. When my daughter outgrew that back seat, we sold it and continued to use the family saloon, but never lost our appreciation of the Sports car.

Some years later, whilst looking for a birthday present for Sandy, I spotted a Silver 1.8 Z3 for sale in a local garage. I took it for a test drive and bought it for her and she loved it. Having had an MGB, the difference between the two cars is remarkable. Sadly the engine on the Silver Z3 got cooked when we took it to France, but we had enjoyed the experience so much, when Mora appeared in our village garage, the temptation was there to part exchange.

Having had the BMW Zed experience for several years, we cannot imagine our lives without one and have made many good friends now because of owning a Zed!:happy::happy:

When I finally accepted that I wouldn't be riding motorbikes any more, bad knees, stiff joints etc, I pondered on treating myself to a sports car. I'd always wanted a classic MGB roadster and looked at a few but the money they wanted for a decent car made me look at other cars. Thought I'd look at more modern examples but was put off the MGTF's by the common overheating problems. So started looking at MX5's, and MR2's but didn't really fancy them. Then I looked at a lovely Mercedes SL300. Nearly bought the Merc, but while I was pondering the sale I saw my Zed.

I was driving through Poole, Dorset, and saw her on a garage forecourt. She was gleaming and I had to stop and have a closer look. She was the first Zed I looked at. It was love at first sight. While I was looking at her the salesman came out with keys in his hand and asked me if I'd like to try her out.

Didn't notice she was an auto until I got in, but I drive an old Mercedes 230ce so I wasn't bothered at all. Didn't know she was a 2.8 either until the salesman started his sales pitch.

Anyway, I turned the key and she growled like a big cat, "chuffin' 'ell" that exhaust is LOUD.

I put my toe down and got an instant wheelspin off the garage forecourt.

Had a ride around Poole and I was smitten, stopped off at a cash point and did the deal while I was sitting in her.

£2995, full service history, 88000 miles, new MOT and I did a deal to trade in my old Saab 900, (there was no way I was selling my old Merc)

This was a Thursday afternoon and agreed to pick her up on Saturday morning.

The ride home to Cornwall was amazing, Poole to Salisbury, up to the A303 then head west, M5 then A30 home to Truro.

The boy racer exhaust had to go though. I swear we were deaf before we hit Salisbury.

Bought a replacement standard new exhaust off Ebay for £130 plus £12.50 carriage from Poland, and it was delivered in 2 days and I fitted it that weekend.

We have enjoyed our first year of Zedding and are looking forward to enjoying many more too.

that could be as we get older we feel the bumps more from the hard suspension, having drove and owned a few sports cars over the year i find the z take up the bumps better and feels more solid, although i guess the z m are a bit stiff

Very long story as published in the ZSCCA's Cruizin' Newz.
My Z3 Story

Well, my story goes back to the spring of 1999. I was a plucky 23 year old who was going to get a late graduation present from my parents. At the time I was an avid GM fan and had owned many Chevy Cavaliers and assorted GM “J” bodies. I was really sold on a model year 2000 dark blue Cavalier Z24 coupe. That was also the year my parents ordered a brand spanking new 2000 e46 323Cic for my mother, fully loaded with all the toys. I couldn’t comprehend paying $50K+ for any vehicle, extolling the virtues that one doesn’t need to spend vast amounts of cash for a fun ride. Can you believe I was crazy enough to turn down a Z3 roadster my dad was trying to sell me on? Anyways, I took delivery of my Cavalier and was as happy as a clam until my mom’s e46 was finally ready for delivery. One test drive in the car and I thought that the 4 cyl in my Z24 was not enough for me.

After owning the Z24 for 6 short months, I traded it in on a late model Pontiac Grand Prix GT coupe. That was a beautiful car, but still no match for my mom’s 323Ci (which by the way had less horsepower then my Grand Prix.) I kept the Grand Prix for 2 more years while saving enough pennies to buy my very own BMW.

When the time had come I found a CPO’d 1998 323is coupe in titanium silver over dove gray interior, it was an absolutely beautiful machine that was a joy to drive.

2 years later I had an itch for a convertible, and traded my trusty 323is in on a 328iC. I owned that car for 5 years. (2003-2008) It was a blast to drive top down, and gave me 5 years of mostly trouble free service. In January 2008 I decided I should get something that was at least manufactured in this decade, so I traded my 328iC on a 2001 325Ci coupe. The e46 coupe body is highly attractive and sporty looking at every angle, and it’s driving dynamics make it a bonafide pleasure to drive.

As winter turned to spring, and the weather got warmer, I feared I made a huge mistake. I kept looking for the retractable roof switch, which my coupe simply couldn’t provide. Friends told me to “just open the windows and sunroof.” By that statement, I could tell they just didn’t get it. The search was on once again. I immediately started scouring all the online sites to find my perfect convertible. I was looking for e36 M3 convertibles, and e46 325/330 convertibles. I found an estoril blue M3 convertible at a local Lexus dealer, so I called. Unfortunately, it had been sold that day, so back to the drawing board. Searching and searching, all the e46 convertibles I found either had too much mileage or were really beat, and e36 M3’s were sort of hard to come by, and I wasn’t going to get another non M3 323/328 e36. At this point I started considering the Z3, after all, my best friend has had a boston green 1.9L for 6 years and he still loved it. His motto is “the only way you’ll get my Z is to pry it from my cold dead fingers!” HAHA, there has to be some reason why he says that.

Whilst searching Autotrader, I found the car I wanted. A 2000 (4/00 manufacture date) Z3 2.3 roadster in Dakar Yellow over black. Just from the pictures I wanted that car so bad. I immediately called the dealer and inquired about it. The salesman told me that the owner of the dealership was driving it at the shore and it should be back in a few days. I told him that I am very very interested in the car, and to please let me know when it’s back because if I like it, he had a guaranteed sale, he said he’d call me, I thanked him, and hung up.

Day 1 passes, Day 2 passes, Day 3 is halfway over and still no call. Being the anxious person I am I called the salesman back to inquire. He told me that he hadn’t forgotten me and that in the past few days they have received quite a few calls about the car, and that I had “first dibbs” because I called first. He then proceeded to tell me the car would be in later that day around 4:30, so if I wanted to come see it then, it would be there. I agreed, and the rest is history!

I love my Z3 and thinking back, if I had accepted my dad’s offer, I could have bought this car new! Either way, it was a great journey, and one I wouldn’t change at all.

* Love the Z so much I bought a second one to keep the first one company in 2013. :)
I also got the 325ci as a daily driver but keep the Z3 as something 'special'.

Maybe it might be best to wait for a little warmer weather. More members will be interested then. The time lapse will be good for renewed interest. Who wants to, or CAN, take the car out somewhere in the cold and snow to take a picture. All that SALT on the road. How about April?
