SitRep: issue resolved. Full diagnostics, no codes. Full service inc coil pack and plugs. Skoda state to change the plugs at 40k miles (Betty has done 36k miles). We're informed it's a known issue that short runs goose the spark plugs on these cars and boy were they goosed! All is now well and back to her normal self, thanks for all your comments.

As an aside, the C-in-C was off out shopping Sunday morning, I got the call "flat front tyre, I'm going shopping in 5 minutes. Don't worry about the driving rain, intense cold and biblical wind, get out there and get it sorted, you fat reserves will keep you warm in your shorts and T-Shirt". :arghh:

Space saver put on and off to Kwikfit on the long haired General's return. 1 car on the ramp, no cars outside and 4 geezers "at work". Monday at noon mate

Good service there then Andy.
Glad they got to the bottom of the problem.

Tony.

Great news it is sorted. Can only assume the ECU was pumping more fuel to compensate for a weak spark at the plug. Guess it was also advancing ignition massively to compensate for the slow fuel burn. Begs the question as to why it happens regularly on those engines.

And you might think that Skoda would've adjusted the plug change interval by now.

Indeed mate, Betty will hence forth get a round trip to Penrith (2hrs) every month to blow out the soot.

Yeah, I think it's attributed to the runs she gets, all short trips. That said, the Galaxy and Freelander never had such an issue 🤷‍♂️
