Peeps, the C-in-C's Skoda Yeti is using more fuel than it should, we've monitored it for a couple of weeks. Topped up a couple of days ago (BP, changed from Tesco) and it's used quarter of a tank (80 miles worth of fuel) but only covered 30 miles. 36k miles 1.2 tsi 2016 plate.

No visible fuel leaks, no smell of fuel, been serviced, code reader put on with no codes showing (says the garage). Plugs not due for 4k miles.

It's had a 500 miles blast a few weeks ago and only started since then. Runs sweet as a nut in all gears 🤷‍♂️

Any possible causes would be most appreciated.

She's booked in for a major service and full diagnostics check in a couple of weeks to see if that makes a difference.

If a “Re call” was due at the time of the last MOT it should tell you on the test certificate.

Thanks. She's a 1.2 tsi. No smell of fuel leaking, I'd be able to smell it a mile away.

You don’t have any brake binding issues do you (though I’m sure you would know). Any splits in inlet hoses, boots etc.?

Tony.

The fuel issue only became apparent after a recent long run mate. Runs sweet as apart from the fuel. I'll do a long ish run over the weekend to see what's what.

Could be a whole load of issues or combination of faults from faulty injector, fouled spark plug, faulty sensor, air leak... the list goes on. Not all will throw an EML - the ECU will simply change settings to try and accommodate what sensors are telling it. My bet is a sensor somewhere.

Can you smell unburnt fuel from the exhaust? Just seeing if the fuel is flowing through the engine will help you focus where to look.

An MOT emissions test may show how much fuel is going through and if the HC content is high that will be unburnt fuel.

Thanks mate, can't say I can smell anything unusual but I'll take a sniff tomorrow.

If you can get diagnostics plugged in try viewing the fuel trims to see what they are doing with the engine up to temp. High readings would indicate it is adding fuel at the injectors to correct what it sees as a lean mixture. On the Z's thats usually down to splits or holes in the intake bellows or vaccum hoses across the engine. Might be a Skoda problem as well? Usually on a Z it will eventually set the EML on the dash when it exceeds 20% more fuel being added and can't add anymore to correct the lean its seeing in the exhaust from the unmetered air that gets there without passing through the Maf sensor. That also brings the Maf sensor in as a suspect on your Skoda if thats gone bad and misreporting what it is seeing.
You are not alone see the Skoda forum here https://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/439534-poor-fuel-economy-2017-12-tsi-dsg/

My thoughts Col, and why I suggested an MOT emission test.

Thanks chaps, she's in tomorrow for a full diagnostic check followed by a full service. I'll get then to check for codes and split hoses.
