Now Daves Zed is back home we quickly in the next project. A lovely low mile (90k) 3.0 Siena Red, first time we’ve ever seen one in the flesh. First thing we did notice was this must be an early M54 3.0 because it had the M52 exhaust setup with the cats mid way down the car instead of how all M54’s have it up on the manifolds.

We forgot photos of when she first arrived but here she is.

worth noting we will be starting a new powder coating process, we’ve started seeing a few zeds we’ve done the last couple of years with spotting of rust in places. We’ve agreed now going forward with the coaters once blasted everything will be Zinc primered before coating.

Nice big juicy update. Been working on Tom’s Zed on and off the last 3 days. She’s mostly played ball even if she did nearly use up a whole bottle of propane.

Starting at the front my goal was to get everything removed and the engine hanging on the bar. I always start by plugging the brake lines then remove the shocks.
29625F0A-3ED8-4378-A421-F71E0E5538E0.jpeg

these bolts needed lots of heat. That’s an 18mm bolt.

lowers also needed lots of heat.

Once the shock is out the way and the nuts are loosened next tool of choice is the ball joint splitter, this is the main reason why I get the shock out the way. Job made easy with this tool

Over lapping Friday in the unit into shed open day Saturday we started disassembling all the metal work ready for powder coating. First up both front knuckles.

stripped down quick enough

crispy

both front ABS sensors really stuck.

One fought all the way to snapping.

didn’t resemble an Allen key bolt
97E0A3A7-03BB-4720-B90A-86894C406A7D.jpeg

moved onto taking the front shocks apart. No life left in these at all.
DA6D5251-217F-4C0F-BC0C-2FFDC454704F.jpeg

Next I tackled a little broken exhaust stud with our new fancy freeze spray.
709F593E-8A0F-494C-B29B-721F87EEC844.jpeg

gave it a coating, left it for a minute. One clout with a club hammer, hey presto!

made light work of that.

Under side looking all stripped ready for cleaning. We decided to remove the engine mounts. Found one stuck to the engine mount. Luckily made easy once in the vice.

diff also got cleaned up and painted. She was in good shape so decided to paint in house.

powder coat pile is now huge!! We have 3 sets of arms in that pile one set of wide body if anyone needs a set. All this stuff will be getting the new treatment of zinc primer coat before powder coating.
CD336EFD-EED8-44A3-BDFA-0C1931D6BDA2.jpeg

Lots of new bits ready to rock. Tom was on point getting stuff ordered early.

Lowering springs and Sachs Shocks.

Now we wait for everything to come back from the powder coaters.

Powder coat got dropped off early Monday and collected after my night shift today. The coaters assure me the parts that have been zinc coated won’t ever rust! This is a result as it’s only an additional £30.

Saturday was a good day even if we did have a few set backs. 3/4 arms came back with holes, the coaters should be checking these before they wrap them up… mind boggles.
also hit a snag with the rear wheel bearings, they looked the part but when installing would not fit the inner hub diameter, ever seen this before.

First few snaps show the fuel tank straps fitted.

next up was to install the diff bush.

then the attempt to fit the bearing assembly.

went In fine but the hub and inner race would not have it

so pair of new Meyle bearings on the way. The powder coat all looks great.

Had a real good couple of days flying solo, could of got more done but I kept having visitors and people wanted coffee :D

First up I completed the front end of Tom’s car, it would be a shed build without some upgrades. First bits were the shields, bearings and brakes.

while the other arms are away being redone I could at least get one side built. I also took delivery of new rear bearings, the last ones had the wrong inner race size for some bizarre reason. Bearing fitted better this time.
