@Steve F - would be interested in more detail about the supercharger if you are willing?
DASC refers to the Downing Atlanta Supercharger that was originally developed for the 318. Downing Atlanta made some changes to fit the M44 in the Z3. It runs the Eaton M62 blower and as it came from Downing, it pushed about 170 HP. Other people have modified it to get up to the 210 HP range at the rear wheels. I have installed some of those modifications on my Z3s. I still am interested in doing others.

Downing discontinued production after Eaton stopped producing the M62. The only way to find one today is through the used market, although an unused unit that someone bought and never installed does come up from time to time. There are blower mounting systems available for the M44 from Hyde or GKD.

The GKD kit uses the Eaton M45 from a Mini Cooper S and is a manifold mounted system similar to the DASC that doesn't allow for charge air cooling.

The Hyde kit has a few different options for blower selections and remote mounts to allow for an air to air intercooler.

If I were to do it again, I'd most likely look at one of those two options.

The modifications I have on my DASC system involve a larger MAF, 30# or 34# injectors and deleting the rising rate fuel pressure regulator, a 3.2" pulley on one and relocating the intake temperature sensor to the manifold. Those mods required that the DME be remapped. I've also installed a phenolic spacer between the head and the manifold to lower the manifold temperature.

On the bench is a hope to install charge air cooling using a Laminova intercooler system.

I've never had either car on the dyno, but I hope to soon. Both cars are a blast to drive.

Thanks, we like this colour. All we have to do now is get it to look as good in reality as it does in the photograph! :)
Haha. Mine is the same. Maybe il never turn upto a meet! Lol. No matter how much i clean and polish and wax it. It probably needs a full respray but it would be double the value of the car and ive just spent £1,000 doing it up. Lol.

Don't let a little "patina" put you off going to a meet. After all it's part of the cars history & at 20+ years old its bound to have a few scars & a story to tell.

No, I don’t use any special tires because I was joking we haven’t Year long driving conditions but can get about a half years worth in at least! It’s nice to be back, I have been pretty ill for quite some time but looking forward to spring this year to get the old car back on the road! I turn it over to my granddaughter in July when she turn 18 though so I have a bit of work to do to the old baby! I will be looking to import another as I did this one so hope to meet some old and new friends when I come to pick it up!!

Hi,
As a newbie, I accidentally looked at this thread from the early few messages and realise that there was quite a dialogue between what a M44 engine was versus an M43 and at what time did such engines appear.
e.g. see below:
I maybe wrong but I thought it was the other way round with the 16V coming out first and then BMW changing it to an 8V in tha facelift version which kind of ties in with Mike's Z3 being a very early 16V.
I have to admit that this was my understanding i.e. 16V first then the 8V.

HOWEVER, what I have not been able to establish, and hence the call to more informed Forum contributors is what is the exact power of such engines and how does one ascertain what the power of one's own (in my case a 1.9l 1999 Z3 M43) engine is. The reason for asking this is that when I search such auction sites I am asked to see if my car is compatible ...everything is fine until I get to the engine where it usually gives me 3 options: viz:
103, 87 OR 85 KW.....

Any ideas? The V5C is of no help.

Kind Regards
Brian

Nice looking car. Great to have the hard top with it. My first Z was a 96 1.9 Boston Green with a black top that I replaced with a beige top. Great solid little car. Good luck with yours..............................Frankie
