I agree mate, I think the Gov. has finally realised how much revenue they're missing out on now.
By the way, and a little OT, we finally got a letter from VW to say we can get Shirl's oil burner "repaired" at no cost to us, hasn't taken that long =)). Still hoping owners may end up getting some compo too! =))=))

Tony.
I got that letter this week, but sold our Tiguan two months ago now.

I won't be buying any more diesels, all of my cars are now petrol and will be staying that way.

Now they just have to sort out the outrageous MPG claims manufacturers have been getting away with for the last few years testing the cars in artificial environments.

We bought an Audi A1 diesel a few years ago, brochure said up to 78mpg. Best we ever got was 54mpg on a long steady run, felt so cheated.

Back to the topic on road tax, I think there will be large sales of low road tax new cars before April. And the late, lower road tax cars, will hold better residual values for the next few years.

I think you're absolutely right on all counts, apart from VW cars. Their residual value will fall steadily but surely. I know many people who say they won't buy another diesel. I think, personally, that in particular France and Germany have got their car industries very rich off the back of slowly poisoning a lot of people through false advertising. I hate working on diesel cars!

Only ever owned one diesel car and that was my 2.8 shogun, have to say that I loved that car, but that was about the safety more then anything else and the fact that it would go anywhere as I live in the sticks and bought it after the winter of 2010 when we was snowed in for 10 days. this is the next year when a conifer came down and missed it inches

Your more than entitled to your opinion @Sean d. I would never buy a new car even if I could so the new car levys wouldn't bother me. But I bought my focus on the fact it is a cheap to run car and the £20 a year road tax was a part of that decision.
Which ever way we look at it, it's the Whitehall w******s strutting there stuff again!

no fan of electric cars, waste of space, they and the electricity they use are not eco produced bit of a sham, hydrogen power seems far more eco. Anyhow for a car to be truly eco there should be standards, like in building to define how much pollution is made when building etc its not just about running one. One thing about this is old cars might hold there value eh :)

I had to Google this bit: Vehicle Excise Duty, or VED.

Bear in mind, too, that it's the final list price of your car which determines that £40,000 threshold – if you buy a cheaper model, but add options that take the price over that point, you'll still have to pay the Premium fee. In short, an option costing a few hundred pounds could end up costing you more than £1500 over five years in extra car tax costs.

I am a fan of both, z3 and a nissan leaf, horses for courses. Leaf does the day to day boring bits cost less than fuel the mondeo used each month free parking and low cost charging at work, plus solar panels at home. Most electric cars are charged overnight when demand is low and can be covered by nuclear and wind.

But not when everybody has one.

I hate them, over ride it when I start my journey. Even my blooming scooter has stop/start.

I also diss like electric handbrakes.

I can see car manufacturers doing lots of post delivery options especially soft configurable ones. Buy the car with all the hardware installed but under the £40k threshold and then lease the add-ons for less than the tax or buy rights to use as a one off cost.

I've heard a rumour that diesels are coming off our company car lists

Nobody really is a fan but most of us don't drive in city traffic -especially London where you move just a few feet at a time quite often for miles on end.
They don't bother me. Never had any problems with the engine stopping. By the time you've depressed the clutch the engine is started again. It's just different.

I spend way too much time in London and Liverpool so the stop start is a must and makes a big difference on the MPG, but I can see it can be a bit of a pain to some rather than a benefit.
