Just my honest opinion about a very sad time in recent history Dave. To simply blame all of it on Magaret Thatcher and her government dismisses the point that the NUM had made it their aim to bring the government down ( quote from Arther Scargill). The DUM, however realised at the time that the industry had to change and being militant wasn't going to save jobs, but just the opposite, a fact told to me by a guy who moved here from Notts who also worked in the mines. I was stopped from going to a job over the Trent by "flying pickets" during the strike and they scared the crap out of me threatening me with violence. I was not connected to mining in any way, shape or form but those bullies stopped me going out to earn my families living. At that point I lost any sympathy for them.
Just my opinion, and that's all I will say about it.:)

Tony.

I blame it on the Romans Tony, I mean, what have they ever done for us apart from roads, drainage, irrigation? And not forgetting the Judeon Popular Front /People's Popular Front of Judea and the Popular Judeon Front.

Tony, I have never condoned violence and never would. I suffered badly at school as I came from an affluent village from a non mining family but most of the kids came from the other two mining villages in the school catchment area. I was regularly bullied although my views were the same as theirs to a point. We all have our opinions mate and I respect yours as a friend but Margaret Thatcher and her butchering menagerie were not worth the dirt on my boots. They completely destroyed our entire area. We have village upon village that sits like ghost towns. Pubs shut, shops shut down and they look embarrassing to people looking in as the council spends nothing on them to keep them of a decent standard.
All the miners now rely on working in warehouses that pop up on a weekly basis earning minium wage as large companies won't invest in our area. I only earn a decent wage as I invested in myself and took my licence but still have to work 60+ hours a week to gain it.
Oh happy Christmas by the way!! ;)

As I said earlier - the politics on both sides were intent on beating the other for idiological reasons only. As @Grumpy posted earlier, I was bought up in the Nottinghamshire coalfield. My dad was well left of Trotsky but he refused to be led by Scargill and his cohorts. He was proud to break the strike in the cause of reason but feared it showed he supported thatcher - he most certainly did not. A neighbour was one of the DUM leaders and he and his young family were regularly threatened. Lifelong friendships were fractured and remain so to this day. Dark days. Very dark days indeed. Many suffered including those not directly involved like @t-tony was threatened. Many families were powerless to stop the inevitable - sadly, it all ended today. It needn't have done so. All because of two people hell-bent on defeating the other. There were thugs on both sides and just a few brave men in the middle whose objective was hijacked by the those in power. When one side had the instruments of state to call upon, the result was never in doubt.

Now, where's my favourite caramel?

What if they bring cadbury's roses in payment for a suspension fitting (as long as they don't scoff them while said fitting is in progress)?
