Well, i wonder where all this supposed green tax goes, and after the vw affair over emissions, just how green are the oil burners, and city driving is a tedious chore best avoided i think, far easier on the bus,and with car park fees as they are probably cheaper, getting us all to buy electric cars is not a practical option with the present limits of our national grid, so the powers that be set unrealistic emissions targets and tax us some more, that works, dont it just

Perhaps it's just me, but I'm sure there's a touch of cynicism about our wonderful politicians' plans for the brave new world creeping in here. Has anyone ever done a comparison between building a new car and keeping an older one going, from an environmentally-friendly point of view? My money would be on keeping the old one running.

I read somewhere years ago that the plants which made catalytic converters in Northern Russia emitted far more noxious gases than would be cremated by the Cats that they produced. Makes you wonder .................

I'm sure I remember a Top Gear from a few years back where JC did a bit about the batteries for a Toyota Pious and the way the stuff was/is mined on one continent, shipped to another continent for processing, shipped again to make the batteries, shipped again to be fitted into the cars, and then exported to the happy customer. I realise that Clarkson may not be the most environmentally correct person in the world, but there does seem to be a lot of wastage and pollution going on with these "green" advances. And as for the amount of extra power stations we'd need if everyone changed to electric cars tomorrow..............

There's plenty of spare capacity in the network overnight when people are tucked in their beds and not using their cars. Norway has enough capacity to give everyone free electricity to charge cars for free!

They'd rather burn themselves on the stake than give us free motoring. If things keep going the way they are we will be ALLOWED a 1.0 Kia running on carrot scrapings built in Korea, shipped here, ran for 6 months till they are to old and scrapped on an island in the Maldives where no one will see thme, for the poorer lot, it'll be a skate board!

I had a brief conversation a couple of months ago with a chap near me who was going to build an electric Trabant. God knows why, but the conversation soon got turned around to an electric Z3.

Soon stopped talking when we looked at the cost of motors, but wouldn't it have been a laugh to pull up out side the Mayor's place in an 18 year old electric Z3 with an engine sound track on the stereo!

hmm, where were those motor brochures?

there is an electric motor powered lotus elise, think its at gaydon now, quite quick but heavy and not much range, wonder if we could get a small nuclear reactor in the boot of a z3, fuel cells go a long way on submarines! ha ha!

there is a firm in the states that is starting to produce conversion kits. none for zeds yet, but they do one for the mx-5

http://www.evwest.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=40&products_id=251

it might only be 71hp but it peaks in the middle of the rev range and the torque curve is flat from 0 to mid revs and equal to peak torque of an M43.

Just need to re-mortgage the house to buy enough lithium-ion batteries!
