If I were you I would take home the cash at work, try move to a 4 day week and do something you really like for that other day - I quite fancy becoming a mechanic (Z3 obviously) and would love to do a 1day a week course!
I've only just gone to 5 days a week the last few years. I do the zed work one or two evenings and saturdays. I've been considering going contract.

How about working as a commissioning engineer in the nuclear industry or how about joining an insurance company as a nuclear surveyor.

So I'm totally stumped what to do next with my career. I've always had a nuclear background weather it be clean or not so clean. I'm a mechanical engineer by trade and did an apprenticeship in this discipline I'm even registered with the IET so I've even got letters after my name. The project I'm working on now Is nearing its end and has actually ended for me in terms of its mechanical element.

So at the moment I'm part manager part technician and sit on the fence between the two, I know the money is good continuing down the management route but It's not me. I have many qualifications but just don't know what to do next. I live by the philosophy that if you enjoy your job you don't work a day in your life.

So the time has come to move onto something new and I'm stuck as what to do. Help!

Do you want longer term project or short term at assorted sites.

MINI plants at Swindon or Oxford either production or R&D
As @Jack Ratt says Insurance industry - inspector or Risk Engineer.

Long unsociable hours and lots of travelling.
Don't go into the Oil & Gas biz then.

It cost her her marriage.
Ditto, same happened to me but I do not regret it, I got well paid and saw the world, in my book beats the hell out of 9 to 5 in some dingy little office.
sh*** happens what ever you do but all that I have experienced during the 30 years of doing it can never be taken away, I got paid to see the world.

I would be tempted to do what Grumpy suggested but work from home till you have a good client base then look to move into premesis. This you can start to do straight away untill you decide what it is you want to do. Only costs would be advertising in local wraggs apart from any tools you would require and would probably buy but can offset them against your tax

Always happy, apart from when I'm not 🤬

That's most philosophical for you HT. But your right to a point mate. We all think differently and as you say it suited who you are. I always fancied driving trucks and always wanted to do European tramping but settled with Jue when I was 22 so it never happened. I wouldn't tramp now as I'm to much a home bird. I stay out one or two nights a week and that is enough for me. Sorry @Lee gone of topic a bit. But I still say draw a business plan up and get that garage up and running. Knowledge is money my friend and you have it by the spade load.

UK is desperate for engineers, loads of opportunities out there but depends on how much time you want on the tools etc / how willing to commute.

What about AWE?

Can't see him doing that to be honest, its always a nice idea to turn a hobby into a job, but........!
It then becomes a job.

Tony.

As glorious as it looks I've heard mixed things working for F1 teams. Long unsociable hours and lots of travelling.
I was just going to add that same thought Lee. How would Sam like you doing all the travel while she stays at home keeping the home fire burning and keeping the Zedshed running smoothly?? JIM

If you were to start up a garage you'd spend more time at your desk and on the phone than repairs which you obviously love!! Can't see that happening unless you were to get someone like @t-tony to run it while you did the labour. There's a reason why he works everyday instead of running his own business he had though but for him it's the lesser of two evils I think.
As for HT having his very own bar, be right over mate and we can have that brewskie together finally!! JIM
