Hi guys, my name is James and I just bought a lovely looking Z3 last Sunday.
To my eyes it is the same spec as the one from Goldeneye (though I'm sure there are a million technical differences, I don't really mind that - it's close enough), its Atlanta Blue and tan leather interior. 1895cc engine, 1998 with 106,000 miles on the clock, and a full service history etc etc, so it looked like an absolute bargain to me and I'm happy with it.
The trouble comes 9am this morning, when on a mildly damp road in moderate traffic I went to turn right on a roundabout (at what I thought was a sensible speed) and totally lost the back end. I spun the car a sharp 120 degrees and ended up mounting the roundabout with my front wheels, with my back wheels still on the road! Luckily there wasn't anyone near me at that moment and everyone stopped to let me gingerly reverse off the island and limp to a nearby cul-de-sac to check the car. Somehow I've come away alive and with absolutely no visible damage to the car except and little bit of scuffing on the underside of the front lip (that you can only see if you are really looking for it).
I was wondering if you guys could lend me some advice on how to proceed and make sure nothing like that ever happens again?
My first thought is that I want new tyres that are made out of glue, and that I shall always take roundabouts at 10mph. What has worried me slightly is that I've read that the ASC should kick in if you go into a skid and that it makes a noise and you can feel it working... Well I didn't feel anything, I didn't see any flashing dashboard lights either. Just for a moment the back end of my car was a hovercraft. There was no visible puddle or slick on the road either, just damp tarmac from the rain earlier this morning. I've never touched the ASC, and at the time the ASC light was not on on the dashboard (which I believe means the traction control is on), and when I test the ASC button the light clearly comes on to say that it has been turned off.
Now I know the reason for the spin is 95% likely that I was driving the car poorly, but for the last 6 years I've been driving a Mk2 Mazda MX5 as my main car (in the rain and light snow) and I've never had any trouble with the heavy front-end and rear-wheel drive. Are there any tips for driving the Z3 to help me in the future?
Sorry for the long introductory message guys! I envisage that I'll be on here a lot!
Cheers,
James
