With a lot of help and guidance from @ZTec the broken top mount was replaced today.
Also the new strengthening plates were fitted.
Has this happened to anyone else?

After finishing, a test drive was required. Well, it would be rude not to on such a lovely day. Tec was test pilot, and took us around the local routes. The car handled brilliantly. I had a go in Tecs car later and we both agreed how well our cars handle for their age. We are both lucky that our Zeds have been given the Zed shed treatment by @Lee & co.
It's only since I recently got the tyres and tracking sorted, that I can fully appreciate the improvement in the car since the boys and girl at the Zed shed did their magic. Thank you one and all.
I never fail to surprise myself at my total lack of knowledge about my own car. I noticed Tecs wing mirrors were folded and remarked " I wish mine did that " , a few squirts of WD40, and hey presto my passenger door mirror now folds upwards. The drivers one is still in need of more treatment, but I'm confident I can get it sorted.
A massive thank you to @ZTec for his help today. Cheers mate.

You're welcome Phil, I must admit ive never seen the rubber insert pushed out of the carrier before, must have been one hell of a pothole. And also thank you for letting me drive your 3.0, well impressed.

Wow that much of been some pot hole! Another option is the powerflex mount. Stops that from happening. Glad you guys are having fun that's how they should be treated :D we collected a new zed today keep an eye out for a new thread ;)

Your missing the top concave washer, this stops this from happening.

Hi Brian, the concave washers were in place when it happened. It was refitted again today but it is masked by the rubber cover.

That washer will stop it being pulled down but not being forced up. This is the second time I've seen this happen on the rear. @PHILIP BAXTER did you loose any fillings :D

I thought there were washers both side of the rubber mount?

Single components for rear spring strut - BMW parts catalog

Yeah there is but not the same diameter like the top washer. It's built into the dust cover.

You've got me thinking now because Philips zed didn't have any rear dust covers on the shocks when we removed them because they were aftermarket. Now If my memory serves me well the zed dust covers have a built in solid cap and act as that washer. So that would mean @PHILIP BAXTER does need to get two more washers to sit under the mount because those dust covers I got don't have that setup. It will work fine for now but when you hit another monster pothole the same thing will happen

Good spot @Brian H

Thanks for this @Brian H and @Lee, which numbered part in the exploded diagram would I need? Cheers Phil

Item 17 you will need two. Undo the mount again sit it under the top mount. This allows the mount to sit on that washer and not pull through if you ever hit a huge bump again.

Cheers @Lee . Will get on it. Also thanks to @Brian H

State on our roads are shocking, pun intended, but shouldn't you have taken photos and sizes of the offending hole and made a claim to the local authority?

You may have a point Brian, but I just didn't think at the time. I was too busy checking my teeth.

Hey Philip, this is exactly what happened to my dad's Z just a few days earlier. How strange.
After you see what can happen, i couldn't possibly use OEM mounts again. The design relies on compression from the washers but once the rubber breaks down you're done for.
I'm still waiting on the Powerflex upgrades but our Z's had a good few miles over the past few weeks using my old M3 mounts, which are the same.
