That time of year already when they start chucking salt on the roads, so, time for the one piece wheels to go back on when I get some winter tyres for them. Discussions with the Ayatollah on Monday for a decent price..Gave them a wash ready last job this afternoon.

If you jet wash the car regularly, including under arches and under sills, its not a big issue. Lots of wet weather driving is also good for keeping the underbody salt free (ish). I firmly believe that cars are best used frequently for a variety of reasons, don't let a little road salt put you off.

I know what your saying Ian but I've always had it in my head about salt killing cars. I know my zed is not worth a fortune but I couldn't afford to replace it so I always took the view to take it off the road come winter to protect it from the elements. I know what you mean, having also grown up with 1960 and 1970s cars that rust killed. Many modern cars are now killed by electronic failure (cost of new "brains" etc), rust is not the great issue it used to be. Regular use mitigates these "modern killers" to a large extent IMO.

The coupe has been out nearly every day and overnight sometimes where the Z3 roadster never stayed out overnight and was frequently left in the garage for a week at a time when the gritters have been out. Think I’m looking at the coupe differently as it’s a tin top, plus it should be a little more secure. Not much of a theory I know but it’s certainly different not having a canvas roof to worry about. New toy new joy, as they say.

Like I said the only thing that bothers me regarding road salt is that it gets between the two parts of the 108 style wheels and if it get to bare metal it will ruin them over a winter, so I don't risk it.

That’s a fair point Tony. No point in ruining them for the sake of half an hour spent swapping them.
Have you chosen winters yet? What are you going for?
Have just bought a set of wheels for the milk float with Continental wintercontact’s, original BMW wheels including tpms fitting and balancing for £275 a corner from BMW themselves. For an extra £30 a year they will swap them twice a year and store the unused set.
The Indy I’ve used before (the wheels on Gail’s car never want to come off for me
) charge £15 a time so I get storage for free. I just couldn’t get either used or new wheels and do it for that price.
As it’s their recommended config there won’t be any arguments about any problems.
Going to have a talk about types and prices tomorrow Ian.

Winter tyres chosen and now fitted on my original one piece wheels. These are style 106 Turbine.
Got these through work, at a fair price too.
New set of "chrome" painted nut covers and the Black carbon centre caps stolen out of the 108s.
Had these on long enough to scrub them in and I have to say I'm really happy with them.
Extremely quiet, much nicer ride and way more grip than slick runflats.

I noticed last week that the puddle lights with the BMW logo that fitted a year ago had started to lose the logo definition so I bought some replacements and fitted them today after Benny had a bath.
The door handle leds were in need of a clean too. The roads have been really grubby round here.
