My Z4................... My way.

So, I had a little time on my hands this afternoon after bailing out at lunch time. I've had a piece of 1.6mm alloy sheet knocking around since I had my Z3 so decided to make a start on a heat shield for my Ramair induction. I started, as with the Z3 with an old air filter box from work to make a template from. Got my sheet metal roller cutter out and adjusted and lubricated the cutting wheels. I ended up with this after a couple of hours.

A lot of trial fittings along with trimming and bending left this,

Secured to the chassis rail with some self-drilling screws I liberated from somewhere  this meant re-locating the coolant pipe which runs along the chassis top. Next thing was searching for a fuel pump mounting, I knew I had a couple still and that they were in a safe place ............................. :) just a strip of steel required to make a stay bracket from off the oil filter housing where I found a very convenient 8mm tapped hole. Thank you BMW
Next job refit the ramair, reconnect the MAF job done, for now.

End result,

Impressive stuff mate. Looks like it should be there

What a great piece of DIY from our resident mechanic up there in the northern Z shed, obviously nothing in the garden needed doing. How does he get away with it.???????.......=))

RHA,Roy.

That looks a good bit of kit Tony:thumbsup:

Nice lengh of rubber door guard from Halfords would finish it and stop any Mechanic knocking some skin off.;)

You mean you had this thermo thing all the time and didn't tell the rest of us. Best keep it to yourself if it's anywhere + what the rest of the underbonnet temp is.:meh:
Be interesting to know the outcome Tony.

The simota housing reduces the amount of hot air being drawn in I guess ?. I'll eventually get round to improving the cold sir supply to it.

Give in to the temptation mate, you know it makes sense :ymdevil:;).

I know it makes sense Steve, sadly my wallet disagrees:( I got to do my wheels first, then, maybe ........... I only said maybe;) I might get the back box off and do a by-pass like , I think, @MAURICE THE MARTIAN did on his car. I need to hear it

I'll find out tomorrow after I get home from the funny factory Roy. I'm fairly confident it will be an improvement mate. Time will tell

It'll feel even sweeter if you wait till funds allow though mate. It is Moz that did the bypass mod on his zed,I've followed him and had the pleasure of the lovely sound it produces, well worth doing and must be a fraction of the cost of a new cat back. I'm sure a man if your talents would do such a job easy enough .

Got two feeds

That's just greedy young man  Had a butchers behind the LH kidney grill today.;) The cogs are turning

Have you thought of extending the metal over the top of the filter as well Tony? The AFE version I have surrounds the filter, and the cover is removable to get access to the cone if needed.

Very impressed with your metal fabricating skills, nice tidy job all round
