I thought I'd create a thread to document what is happening with my new Palmetto Green 2.8. She's been christened Bella, by my wife.

I went through the history today, and it's got the booked stamped until 2008, then invoices for regular services, MOTs, new calipers, brakes/discs, wheel bearing, axle carrier bushes, diff bush, tyres, wheels powder coating, tracking, clutch/flywheel.

Whilst very presentable, there are some areas that will need improving. The ends of the sills have a bit of rust. I want to catch these before they get worse. There are a few parking dings. There is also a noise (https://zroadster.org/threads/what-is-this-noise.34901/#post-552991), which may be the belt tensioner.

The mileage is currently around 104300. After getting her home.

The bumper doesn't align properly on this side. It may have taken a slight bump.

The paintwork around the badge on the passenger side gill isn't that great.

The drivers side is a lot better and I suspect it has been off and painted, as I can detect a minor difference in the shade. And it's a few MM to the right.

The passenger side lens is cracked and there's some chipped paint.

Finally, the door handle gaskets have seen better days.

It will need the seat bushes replacing too (no surprise there).

Future plans include replacing various suspension bushes, cleaning and painting the underside and components etc. I don't have any big plans yet, as it's my first Z3 and I want to enjoy her.

Do not forget the noise from the engine. The corrosion issues can wait. A shattered fan will cause damage and it's way past the mileage . Just saying.

@t-tony You may need to re-edit the quote. I didn't see your comment at first. I'm going to investigate the noise tomorrow. That's the priority to fix.

I've read about the fans shattering. Is there a particular reason why? Damage? Age? Should I be replacing the viscous coupling as well? I can't find any invoices in the history for a water pump, but there is for a thermostat and hoses, so I think I'll replace that for peace of mind.

Best to ask Z3 owners to be fair . We did @Grumps at the ZedShed (Midlands) a few years ago now, new viscous coupling, fan and water pump after Dave had the fan lose some blades while out on a cruise. He limped it back home to Mansfield, assembled the bits and again limped it over here to Torksey. We have a " new" fan cowling here to fit on Dawns Z3 which has a chunk missing out of it. I think I'm correct in saying @GazHyde even had a replacement fan shatter on his Z3.

ps. Post edited, Thank you.:)

Yes, you do @t-tony and if I recall correctly, I was driving along when suddenly, my car couldn’t accelerate even with my foot flat to the floor. Pulled into a very handy lay-by to discover the fan had flown off and torn the fan shroud to pieces. Upon later inspection, found the radiator had damage BUT the Z God was smiling down as the rad damage hadn’t caused leakage...very lucky!

Indeedy. I'd replace the lot if your delving in. As Tony says my blade threw some blades so we changed the lot. Peace of mind for a couple of hundred quid.

Yeah I think I will be doing that. We had a water pump failure on the E36 a few months ago and it wasn't fun.

The Z3 bug has started to bite. I've just bought this brochure which has a Palmetto green roadster in the middle.

That looks like an original brochure: where did you buy it from @Palmetto ?

I believe the fan shatters due to the wear in the water pump shaft

I replaced the water pump, thermostat and tensioner at 106,000 as a precautiion. all the parts I removed looked perfect but were replaced with new OEM anyway. I gave the fan and coupling a good inspection and refitted. I think what Sean says is probably correct.

It's the viscous fan coupling which causes fan failure and water pump bearing wear.

I popped down to my mates garage tonight to show him the car, to try and diagnose the noise, and to book it in for a service. The noise may be just me. (see the 'noise' thread). Anyway, full service, new water pump, fan and belt will be installed on Wednesday.

In the mean time, here are a couple of pics of the engine bay.

Firstly, great to see you make a progress thread and secondly, I can't believe no one had taken 'Palmetto' for screen name.

Many people mistake the Palmetto for a Palm tree.
