When dealing with the brake discs, either new or tidying up old ones, I like to paint the whole disc in spray-on BBQ paint. I fint silver best as it seems to be thicker than the black and is cheap as chips on ebay.
The first time you use the brakes the paint will come off on the contact areas but stay on the other areas, stops the edge and cooling fins from rusting up. It also works on the callipers and I find it much easier than calliper paint.
Looks so much better for very little effort.

Barbecue, chips! Making me feel hungry Steve!

Going to order some silver bbq paint on eBay now so I do not forget the idea.

We send our discs away to be be zinc plated. Same kind of idea.

Paul, our E36 is originally from BMW in Sunderland. It must have lived there a lot of its life because it has (had) serious rot before we started restoring her. My wife is also a Mackem.

I can't help with the gasket, but I'm sure someone on here will be able to. Keep up the good work!
I live right on the coast so rust removal was very much needed.

I've also fitted some red footwell lights, I need to relocate them further down. They reflect onto the window and i find it very distracting when I'm driving at night =))

Hello, how big a job is an aircon refresh?

I know i can just put the roof down but im living in a very rural part of SW Scotland now and the midge are a fkn nightmare.

It needs to go to a garage to be regassed, its likely been empty for years. Will i need a complete gasket and system overhaul? It engages when i press the button just doesn't blow cold. If they are easily accessible is this something I could do?

Thank you.

I would recommend going to a garage that does them as they can safely drain your system, vacuum test it for leaks and then refill the system if all is well with the leak test adding the correct amount. You can get the kits from places like Halfords or Amazon but works out cheaper going to a garage around my area, I had the wife’s cooper s done for £39.99.

Just read through the whole thread, well done Paul - it's an inspiration to me as a new owner. My skills lack but my enthusiasm is there and I'm lucky to have found @colb and the Newport Zedshed to help and guide me.

Keep up the good work, mate :)

If the compressor elctro-magnetic coupling pulls when you turn on the aircon the must be some pressure because there is a switch in the system which, if it detects low/no pressure it cuts the power feed to compressor drive. So you can be hopeful that a regas is all that is needed.

Tony.

Thank you, what did you buy? Do you have a thread started?

I've been moving house again so haven't had the time to drop in here.

Hello, i knew ive needed a new rear window or roof for a while, ive bodged it up with tape.

I kept hearing excessive wind noise while driving so i just had a look tonight, the right side of the window stitching has gave up and left a 6inch gap.

It rains an awful lot here in new luce so i need to do something quick. Ive tried to bond it tonight using aquasure, a waterproof flexible repair glue normally for waders etc and some tape to hold it in place until it cures.

Hopefully this will do a job of sorts and get me through winter. I'll contact smiths in swansea tomorrow and get it booked in. I think its a 6mth wait atm.

Its not a job i want to tackle myself, im not sure my autistic brain could handle it. If it didnt go well i would get p***** off and walk away.

Are those roof covers ok? I should probably buy one and cover it when the rain sets in.
