With the new systems with the Typhoons coming online next year, at least the will be something to cover the loss of the GR4's. A lot of these armchair pilots overlook Typhoon as they just call it 4th gen and go on about 5th gen stuff from Russia and China, but Typhoon is a very good platform and can hold it's own pretty well. The mighty 'two man two fan swing wing angel of death'. Sadly the old girl will take her last flight before being decommissioned in March 2019 A great servant and a great kite. As a retired RAF Firefighter she was the first kite I worked on, GR1 that is, happy days indeed crawling round a wheel brake fire whilst pining all the armaments and making safe the Mauser Cannon then pining the seats and making safe the cockpit. Great days indeed.
RB199's, the sound of freedom
I'm hoping to go down to Portsmouth next year and see Big Lissie. I hope FAA and the RAF can get the F-35B's online pretty soon, as we at least have enough of them in the UK that if they needed to be pressed into service early (like the Falklands) there is enough of a force to do what needs to be done.
My first love will always be Concorde, it's just saddening that I know it's pretty much impossible to ever get one back in the air. I was lucky enough to go to Filton with my dad years ago and I went on G-BOAF in the early days, where they were using ground power to light her up, before they had to do work to change her from aircraft to museum piece.
After I get the ops done on my back next year, I really want to go upto the Mach Loop. I'm not one for the photos, but just to have aircraft screaming past on low level runs is my idea of a bloody good day out.
Finally, thank you for your service. I wish people in the UK had the same attitude of respecting service people as the Americans. When I worked in the NHS is was during the height of the two wars. I organised clinics for specialist upper limb surgeon and a plastic surgeon. We had a lot of the lads coming through and the doctors told me that they were to go to the front of any list and were to be seen within two weeks. This attitude really resinated with me, as I had friends who went out there and once the left the service, they found civy street really difficult.
