A definite sign that the seals need replacing.

To be honest the seals should be a DIY. I'd only get Mr Vanos in if the whole unit needs replacing
I'd like to have a go but I wouldn't know where to start. If it took Lee 2 hours it would take me 2 days Lol!!

Erm think mine is ready. It Just doesn't seem to have the same kick it did when i bought it.
That may be because you got used to the power. My M doesn't have same kick as when I picked it up =))

Oooooh, not big and brave enough I'm sad to say, now if I had a practice car that was a runner ...........
I thought about doing VANOS as a business, but the cost of rectifying a catastrophic malfunction would be crippling, as would proving where the fault lay. Too much risk, especially working on a car with an unknown history.

Happy to give advice, but actually doing the job would be a liability nightmare.

I'll probably get the seals and get my local garage to do it for me, he's a quality mechanic.

The M44 engine is delightfully simple compared to the S54 engine. Much more "amateur spanner" friendly.:)

I need to have my valve cover gasket done so is this one of those whilst you there jobs as you have access to the vanos seal when changing the valve cover gasket?
Mines a single so simpler job.
(I'm not going to do it, will have a garage do it, I can't be trusted with small important bolts!)

The X8R kit I linked to above comes with all the gaskets, even a little tube of silicone gasket stuff for the lumpy bits and corners. The original (as far as I know) gasket that should be fairly soft rubber had gone crispy and pretty much shattered when I took it off, beware of little bits falling in amongst the whirly gubbins under there. And there's no need for the cam locking tools, although it probably wouldn't hurt to check the cam timing while you're in there, the chain's bound to have stretched a bit by now, and a degree or two out on the cam timing can make quite a difference.

I am also doing my rocker cover and am just waiting on the Vanos seal kit to arrive, then will do it myself. I have watched many videos so am confident of tackling the vanos. Ideally I would like the lifters done but don't have the tools and whatnot.
