mot woes

oops i think i have messed up, my zed is due its mot on the 31st this month, i have a 6 inch crack in the windscreen and the insurance company cant fix it until Jan 8th but im back at work on the 4th looks like i will be scrounging a lift in for a few days, should have got it done when the crack first appeared back in October, i didn't as the screen had only been in for about 4 months (and at that point it was tiny)

it starts under the passenger wiper and goes about 6 inches upwards, its not in my field of vision but i thought a crack was a failure? it does go into the wiper area - so its 6 inches long and is about 4 inches in from the passenger side edge,

yes they will, but this would require me to drive to work on the 8th with no mot. if i have no mot does this not invalidate my insurance?

That should pass the M.OT. with an advisory. If it doesn't restrict the drivers view to the front.

Just lend the MOT Tester your dark glasses, perhaps he won't notice the crack either?

well - its gone in for its judgement , to be fair while i was driving there i noticed a van while i was sitting at a roundabout, (this is not a nudge for viability comments HT) this van still had its tax disc and holder complete with a couple of round stickers in the same area to where my damage is, so in theory i have more vision than this van driver, maybe i should have re-attached my old tax disc too. it would only effect my view if i was sitting lower than the steering wheel, in which case the crack would be the least of my worries (i also gave it some welly before dropping it off, hope its not parked up too long).

Believe it or not cars have been failed because!," A taller driver would sit higher and it would affect his view!" Not a reason for rejection I'm afraid. You have to use common sense.

i think that it depends a lot on how long someone has been doing mots, after a few years doesn't all the grey areas become just black and white, like errr its a bit corroded but it is securely fastened and not leaking - pass

Up to a point, but I had a girl came back with her Clio with a n/s/f broken coil Spring saying 2 garages have looked and it isn't broken. I put it on a ramp and showed her it was broken at the top, hard to see but there if you looked properly.

You also have to contend with the "glass half full, glass half empty" examiners. Some will always err on the side of caution and fail a borderline issue.
It's the easiest and safest option for them. I see it every day in my job. One of my colleagues must have the highest rejection figures of any of our surveyors. For him to pass it, the equipment has to be almost pristine.
We have some customers who wont have him on their premises.
In my eyes, it's the easiest thing in the world to reject an item, the skill is how much wear and tear you can allow. The important thing is to be able to distinguish between wear and tear and permanent deformation. To me, it's as plain as the nose on your face, but some people have problems seeing it.

Sounds like it would be a failure. It might just get through as an advisory if you show you have the earliest appointment to get it replaced - depending on the tester. It could have happened on your way to the test station giving you no chance to get it fixed.

I had mine replaced on the drive a few weeks ago (in the LR not the Zed). It had a 50mm diameter circular crack (literally a circle caused by a car belting past me at over 90 throwing up a stone - got it on the dash cam!), but I've just realised it was just outside the swept area in the bottom right hand corner of the screen. In theory, it could have passed but I decided it wasn't worth the risk. MoT is being done on the 11th. Thankfully the day it was change, I had the only day with sunshine that week.
The problem with a straight crack is that it destroys the integrity of the screen - should you be involved in an accident, it will fracture and give way far more easily.
