Thanks MG. That's interesting because my son's S54 Z4MC is now running fine with a pre-used coil and reset of the code. That tends to suggest that the reset is incidental. The coil originated from a set replaced when this problem arose on a track day. We got a set off eBay and changed them with the OEM ones but didn't cure the problem on that occasion. The BMW indy found a hose off in the induction system which cured it then. It's a bit of a black art methinks!

Changed the plugs tonight. Old one from cylinder 3 was blacker than the others, I'm hoping that's just from the misfire and fuel shutoff.

Gave the car a tank full of super unleaded and half a can of cleaner/additive. I say half a can because half went in the tank and the other half spilled all over the garage floor

The car is still running fine since swapping that coil pack around with number 4.

I have an oil and filter change to do at the weekend and hopefully that'll be it.
