Thought it was about time I started the journal on the new venture – Rhubarb

Purchased from Knights Garage in Thame, Russ is a seriously nice bloke who knows his coupes. His is a track destroyer!

The details:
  • 1999 Z3M Coupe in imola over imola
  • 101k miles on the clock
  • Optional extras include upgraded hifi (including CD changer), front washer jets and cruise control
  • Full respray has been conducted very recently so the paintwork is in pretty good condition
  • Sitting on KWV3 suspension
  • Otherwise pretty standard
Pictures just after I picked her up:

Seats

The seat bolsters were pretty worn when I received her – the seats always get scuffed up here. No problem, Scuffmaster will sort that problem out!!

After

I also fitted @southernboy’s seat lift mod. I was pleasantly surprised by the difference it has made given the small lift produced by the kit.

Engine Bay

I’m a sucker for a clean engine bay. The bay on this car definitely needed some attention to get it up to the standard of the rest of the car

It seemed to be caked in a waxy substance (and Stacey’s is the same) which took some considerable work to get off, using a combination of Autoglym Engine and Machine Cleaner, some scraping tools and some elbow grease

Half n half

Fully clean

The final piece of the puzzle was to fit a new rocker cover and plenum, freshly returned courtesy of
@Aceman. This is a seriously nice piece of work that he’s turning out

Always nice to check the condition under the rocker cover. All good here:

And finally fitted:

Fitted Stormworks gear knob
Fitted Simota Carbon Fibre Induction Kit

Looking really good Martin. The before and after shots of the engine bay are incredible. Just shows what a bit of hard work can produce.

Nice to see Rhubarb coming together after the unfortunate demise of Ruby.
Looks good Martin my engine bay is covered in the same waxy substance i presume it is hardened wax oil, like you say a pig to get off!!
Looking forward to all things no doubt you have planned.

Wellsway BMW

This was a rather special event. Wellsway in Bath wanted to invite their customers to test drive some of the latest ///M cars. They arranged a special gathering of old M cars to display inside and outside their showroom, and any free slots on the demonstrator cars were ours for the taking. In the end I got to drive the M235i, M6 and M3. Whilst they are very quick and capable cars, I’ll keep my old beater thanks.

And the best bit? My car was right at the front of house, the first car anyone saw!

To do:
  • Fit a braided clutch hose (difficult to engage 1st and reverse when hot)
  • New oil cooler pipe (down to corrosion)
  • Wheel refurbishment
  • A very special modification, which I can update on later hopefully

It's a great looking car

Front plate isn't straight which is letting the front of the car down imo

Lovely car, glad you chose a name I once suggested...;)

Front plate looks straight to me, its just the angle of the last photo.

Fantastic write up @Mnbrennan :p
Looking forward to more photos :)

Glad to see you back in a Coupe.
How do you find the KWV3? That's adjustable for bump and rebound right. Around 2k for those if I recall correct.

Great photo's Martin and really pleased you like the cam cover and plenum, your old ones are at the powder coasters now getting ready for the next engine bay.

Let me know how you get on with the clutch hose and any tips on getting the old one off.

I had the clutch 'ose replaced today by Russ at DMWorx in Aylesbury. It took him about 30 minutes to complete.

Clutch now feels much better, and the bite point feel right now!

Ahh probably best getting somebody to do mine as it really is a job for ramps or more than one pair of hands.

I can see what you meant about access, its pretty abysmal. No way I would attempt that on ramps!

Well when I said ramps I meant the two or four poster variety rather than axle stands I used when I attempted the job.
