As you have come this far you may as well change the shoes and fixings, clean everything up and a good dose of grease, alco worth scrubbing the glaze off the inside of the drum with some 120 grit sand paper
Thanks. I suppose a new set of shoes and springs isn't much although I'm having to replace the back plate (rusted) and bolts (rounded) too so the cost is mounting up! This is why I'm trying to sell any spare bits I have on here to fund maintenance.

I looked on eBay but going to ring BMW with a full list of parts needed tomorrow. I may not need the whole plate now though. It's just one of the holes where the small springs attach to the plate. I found some 'brake shoe hold down washers' that should do the job to save me having to cut the whole plate off.

You can replace the hold-down pins with a couple of 5mm screws and ni-loc nuts and flat washers. If the rest of the back plate is sound these screws will last for ever. Just drill through the back plate if needed and the original dished washers.

The plate isn't the best but yes it's mainly fine other than the pin that holds the shoe on one side ripping through the rusted metal. Thank you for the suggestion.
